Default Memory and application usage?

Please Login to Remove!

New to the BBForums. Really like the content.

I'll ask an easy and stupid question: To quit an app, I usually press the "back/escape" button. I don't "close" the app. Will does eat away memory. More importantly, will this use up more battery???

If so, why don't they make it easier to close an application, instead of going to options to select "close".

thanks guys!

Yes, it will use memory and run down the battery at the same time. The reason it does this, is so you can be working on something and then go do something else. Then return to where you left off. I actually like that it does this. It keeps me from accidentally closing something important.

Escape is the button to close the app. There are a few apps that never close like the browser, messages and phone

That is not true. If you're running a game or another program, like BBWeather and you just press ESC, it will still be running. Try it and then do ALT + ESC and it will still show up under running programs. You MUST press menu/close in order to close the program.

I think that Stinsondogg said in his shortcut list that if you hold down escape (not just press it) it closes it. I'll try later.

I just tried that with BBWeather and it was still running in the background.

Correct you are! Not all apps close with the esc key. You have to use the menu key to close/exit most applications.

Yep, that sounds like correct. I always "close" everything in the browser, but apps I just hold escape down. Thanks.

Holding ESC doesn't close the apps. They are still running in the background. Holding ESC will close the browser, but that's it.

It seems in older bb models the esc was usually sufficient to close most apps. However on the 8100 you need to press the menu key then select 'close' to completely close most apps. Similiar to window based phones. I assume this change is necesssary because with added media capability you might not want completely close an app. Such as the media player. You might want to put on some music the also continue to use others apps on the bb while still having music in the background.

Just my observations.

It worked the same way on my 7100. I actually enjoy it, especially when I use google maps, I can go to other programs and come back to the location that I last looked up, I don't have to leave google maps on the screen the entire time.
