Took the plunge and ordered a Pearl
Please Login to Remove!
Dumping my Sprint PocketPC phone (Windows mobile too unstable for me) and ordered a Pearl from Cingular. Got a good price ($99) and we get a discount on service. I hope I did the right thing
I can get a BES for $99 for a single user - what would that get me over just using my POP mail?

Are you using the BB for corporate/work email? Are you going to be connecting to you company's Blackberry server? Otherwise, the BIS plan is what you need. It provides you with connection to BB's Internet service and unlimited data. 10 email accounts that you can add to your BIS account as well.

The BES would be $99 more per month? Or $99 total (incl. phone service?) Or...???
As far as I know (and I'm ready to be corrected), the BES will provide wireless synch of your calendar, contacts, etc. A BIS will not. Both will push e-mail to your BB. On the BIS you can add up to 10 e-mail accounts. Probably the same or more on a BES. A BES is usually hosted by a company (the "work account") but soem BES are available for a fee for private users. Both give you unlimited data access.
Let the corrections and filling in of omissions begin... $^)

The BB OS is so much more advanced and more stable then MS mobile 5. That alone is worth $1,000. At $99 you got a great deal.

Amen! I've done some work on Palm, Win Mobile and BB and BB is the most stable (followed by Palm - Win isn't even 3rd out of 3!)
Right now my PIM data is in Outlook on my laptop and sync to PocketPC. I will try out BB desktop but I believe I can still sync to Outlook if I prefer.
Home PC is always on, so if I need my own BES it would go there. The $99 is single user, onetime, not per month (I certainly hope!!). If I understand correctly, BES will allow me to push my email to the BB (as opposed to requesting a sync from the device?)

Its more a question of "how do I know if I need one?"

I'm guessing that if you are asking that question, you probably don't really "need" BES. I would try out the service with the BIS first, and see how you like that. If you find that you really need to have the options that BES adds, then you can look at adding that on to your account later.
From what I remember, you can download BES Express from RIM. I believe it gives you one license for free.

Right now my usage will be:
cal sync w/Outlook
email sync w/POP
contacts sync w/Outlook
todo sync w/Outlook
web browsing
games
I am used to the pull email model - take device, press button, sync w/laptop to get data. I want push - someone sends email and have it sent to my device without having to ask for it. That can be done without BES?

Yes you do not need BES to get push email. BIS does that it sounds like you just need the BIS.

All of that can be done with BIS as long as you don't mind sync'ing the device manually. If you want wireless sync, then BES is the way to go.
Push email can be accomplished by either using the blackberry.net email address, or a Gmail address. I think Yahoo may even do this, but I don't have an account to verify that. POP account will not be Push email. The server will pull them every 15 minutes or so. You can however forward those accounts to one of the Push accounts above and then they will be instant.

My gf is on a BIS. SHe gets 2 e-mail accounts (both on Yahoo) pushed to her BB, and synchs contacts and calendar with Outlook when the BB is connected to her pc. I'm on a BES at work. Work e-mail (and my tmo.blackberry.net email) get pushed to my BB, plus wireless synchs of calendar/contacts with my work computer. I manually synch calendar and contacts with my home pc when connected.
I think the main thing you lose with a BIS is the ability to wirelessly synch contacts and calendar (and e-mailboxes). But you can synch them when connected anyway.

You should be good on BIS. I have a BB8100 on both BES (w/restrictions) for work and BIS for personal use.
