Truth be told, I know I found the answer in here earlier. But would someone please indulge me:
As I recall, I have to switch something on the 8703e to get a single letter moving me to the icon, eg, M for messages, A for addresses, N for BlackBerry Messenger. Would you please remind me?

Call Log > Click Trackwheel > Options > General Options > Dial from Home Screen > No
