Default Anyone host BES at home?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello everyone,

Has anyone ever hosted a BES from their home connection? I was thinking to try it, just play around with it. Has anyone here ever done it - even just for testing?

Any thoughts, concerns or things I should be worried about? I've got my mail down pat with Exchange (MX records and such)

Cheers,

lieb39

should work fine, only issue is potential connection loss. If you lose you internet connection or its flaky and you BES server attempt to connect 5 times in one minute then you SRP ID will be diabled.

other than that it should be fine

mds is a component of BES, going goes via the router component which facilitates the external connection. therefore doesn't matter if you enable MDS no config required

Ah ok. Sorry, I've read the manual for BES server, even printed it out but I still lack knowledge in some areas because I have yet to play with the server itself. Do you have a pin number I could reach you at incase I hey stuck?

Thanks!

I know that a few of the Rim techs and some of the networks guys do this. But you'll also need a domain and a server instance (notes/exchnane or GW), and whilst you can virtualise it, it's gonna cost a few bucks in terms of hw and s/w licensing, plus it'll take a bit of time to setup..

Yep, I know. I've got a few domains - I'm just going to use a subdomain and forward the MX records of that to my home address. Also, I have a MSDN copy of Exchange, so I'm setup there. Finally, I use VMWare Server, a free product, so I can test it / play around with it and such.

I try to activate my device, however the device just gets stuck on 'Activating...' until it times out. I've forwarded the port and cofirmed that the email works without issues. What else could the issue be?

Thanks!

Has the device been activated on the Providers' wireless network? If it is activated, then do a security wipe of the device then perform either an EA or a tethered (sync with desktop) activation.

FYI, your MSDN license for Exchange would not cover your current use of the product.

Not that I'm really big on licensing issues outside of a corporate environment, but just pointing this out...

I'm not - it's for pure testing only. But again, I don't know the grounds on that. Would it make that much of a difference if I were to get the trial for exchange - and waste time and bandwidth?

Cheers

I think you guys are scaring him with the MSDN licensing lingo. As long as he can substantiate that this is a test environment, he should be fine. Just keep in mind though, MSDN software only give you 10 installs for the license key.

If i enabled inbound, would that cause the BB to not activate wirelessly? I ask because I won't be able to test again until Saturday.

Cheers

Yep, I run a 2003 AD domain (multiple domain controllers) with a single Exchange 2003 server hosting OWA and my stores. I also run a single BES 4.1 SP2. I have an 8700 and a 7290 for my devices. No problems. Event logs are clean as a whistle. Need to make sure your DNS straight (MX records) and that 3101 is open and can pass the network connection test during installation.

Your ISP connection should (obviously) be a use static or (near static IP address). I am on a cable modem and have had the same IP for over a year now.

Make sure you can send and recieve email to and from your domain without issues.

BES should be the easiest and quickest part.
