Default Ignorant Store Clerks

I stopped at the local phone store today for something which they didn't end up having. The store represents numerous carriers, so while I was there I thought I should at least look at an 8100. The girl working there looked at me like I was an idiot. She said here's the latest Blackberry, and picked up an 8700. Then she said it must have only been released from RIM as an unlocked phone. I said nope, it's Tmobile. So she says it must have been released only in certain areas. Then she tries to tell me how great the sidekick is. If I had actually gone there with the intention of buying an 8100 today, I think I would have choked her. I guess I know where I'll NOT be buying my next phone.

Thats why you always go to a T-mo corp store and not a indirect dealer.

It pays to be an informed consumer. At least that's my excuse for surfing the interweb for 23 hours a day.

Eh sounds like talking to my kids about 1/2 the time, and I still love them, so what's the exact problem here?

Unfortunately stores will always have people that are uninformed or just not motivated. To some it's just a pay check and could care less.

No problem. I was just venting. They deal with five or six carriers, so it probably really is tough to keep up on everything with all of them. Her obvious bias against Blackberries also means she probably doesn't care. But...she said her Tmo rep was just in a couple days ago and she didn't mention anything. You would think that Tmo would at least send a memo to stores that rep their company.
She did give me a good piece of information though. She said Sprint is allowing Nextel customers to get out of their contract with no early termination fee when they switch to Sprint. So she wasn't completely useless.

I always thought that Spint and Nextel were the same company?

Meh. Someone truly competent wouldn't be sufficiently compensated for the job nor interested in it for very long. If you're reading BlackberryForums or HoFo them complaining about unknowledgeable store reps seems pretty pointless to me (IMO you might as well complain that the sky is blue while you're at it). Do people really expect them to be as fanatical about devices as wireless fanboys?

Let's put it this way - most of the knowledgeable folks go out in the real world and get a real job, not jockey for minimum wage at a cell phone store, dealing with mostly ignorant masses who would say something like this "Oh, I just want to IM all my girlfriends and like chat on AOL and send pictures of me dressed up in my bling, and Oh wow, can I get a Nelly ringtone on this redberry? Wow, so, like this rasberry will turn my cell phone into mp3 player? Can I hook it up to my iPod? And what's this blacktooth thingie?"

If the local phone store didn't get any 8100's then I can see some of them lying or trying to mislead you just to sell something they have. Personally, whenever a store has not had something and recommends another store that does, I'm impressed. And I remember. Good service is something that should be rewarded, nurtured, like a growing plant. Because it's getting harder and harder to find.
