Looking to finally upgrade off of MSDE to SQL 2000, and i was just curious how the SQL licensing works with the BES connections.

Do we just need to buy a server license for SQL 2000 and 2 CAL's? or 5 CAL's?

How does that side work, or is it included with the BES software?

The only license you need is the standard Per Processor SQL License, there is no License or Cals from RIM for the DB Server as there is not RIM software on it.

thats nice to spend 6k on a processor license when you have 10 users in BES.

From reading the SQL 2005 License agreement, it sounds as if you need a SQL license for each user who is being provided a Service from an application connecting to the SQL server.

Microsoft wants to get everyone onto buying a Server license (not processor) and then adding user cal's. Bes would be the middleware in their current licensing agreement language.

Well for 10 users you use MSDE.
