Question EDGE on 7100

Please Login to Remove!

So seeing that EDGE is not available for the 71xx phones and except for the 8700 is pretty much non-existence when it comes to blackberry product, I have a thought or two to take advantage of it. Now I am a newbie at this so please don't laugh at me if my information is not correct.

I was told that EDGE is not power by a specific chipset in the phone but by the software that runs it. With that said, couldn't we simply download the OS for the 8700 series onto the 7100 series phone to take advantage of it?? Of course, this wouldn't work if there was a special hardware device in the 8700 that takes advantage of the EDGE service which is not in the 7100 device. I was simply told by Tmobile tech support that its not a hardware thing but a software one.

Anywho, just my 2 cents

Yes, EDGE is a sotfware upgrade for capable BlackBerries.
No, installing the 8700 OS on a 71xx will not work. They are not inter-changable.

So if I get an 8700 on TMobile - will I automatically get Edge? Will it cost more? Thanks

For existing 7100 rogers units - are they definitely not getting EDGE? Because if not, we will probably wait for any future 71xx GSM.

Are the 4.1 7100s on other carriers operating in EDGE mode?

No. Not at this time.

There is, however, a 7130g coming that is EDGE capable, as well as the 7130u, which is UMTS capable.

The 7100s do not run on EDGE. With 4.0, 4.0.2, 4.1 or 4.99 - they are GPRS devices.

You want EDGE - get an 8700.

Wirelessly posted (7105t: BlackBerry7100/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Just to be clear here, it is not 'just a software upgrade' for EDGE. EDGE requires an EDGE chipset. Whomever told you otherwise is misinformred.

If you prefer the 71xx style over the 8700, here's a pic of the EDGE version mentioned above that's coming soon....though by the looks of it it is not entirely the same...http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/04/b...eal-fcc-style/

I tried that with the 8700g OS on my 7105t. The desktop manager upgrade went fine. I almost lost my BB when I tried to upgrade the OS however. DON'T do it.
