Default How Fast Is EDGE on Cingular Blue/Orange???

Please Login to Remove!

I've read so many mixed opinions and comments on EDGE data speeds when being tethered as a modem that it doesn't make sense. Some people say boradband speeds and some people say dialup. I need to achieve broadband speeds through my 8700 if at all possible. I have mine setup as a modem on my notebook and it is clearly dialup speed.

I would appreciate if a BB veteran that is familiar with using an 8700c on the former AT&T side (Cingular Blue) to tell me what type of speeds I can achieve following Matt's tutorial? AND if EDGE IS capable of broadband speeds, what exactly must I do to achieve them? Even if that means killing my contract and switching over to Cingular Orange.

I'm no expert in this area but I believe you have two major variables at play:

Your reception. You're stuck on this one.

The APN you're using. I'm not 100% on this but I believe that the isp.cinular and the wap.cingular APN's don't have the same thoughput.

Again, can't say that I'm 100% because I get the 736 error.

Where are you located?
If a metro area - maybe VZW with EV-DO,is the way to go. I am leaning that way. Gonna try the 8700 on TMO when it becomes avail. But if its not hot, im jumpin the fence.

Columbus Ohio and I'm in the Akron, Canton and Clevelland areas quite frequently. I'm in Canton at the time of this post.

From your question I take it that the EDGE speeds aren't network-wide yet?

When in most major cities you should get bursts up to 130-170 kbps on ANY EDGE compliant modem when on Cingular's EDGE network. The bandwidth starts at around 70-90 kbps, and bursts up to 130-170 kbps. I suggest using the WAP APN when using the 8700c in tethering mode.

Which directions should I use to set up the WAP APN on Cingular Blue? Most that I've tried haven't worked properly. I understand how to set everything up but if you could give me the exact settings you use, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
