facebook messages not alerting me

hey hope someone can help me, im a newbie to blackberry so u mite need to go into detail if u can answer my query lol. I get facebook notifications if someone posts on my wall etc and my fone beeps to let me know but for some reason if somone messages me privately my fone doesnt beep, the only way i know they have messaged me privately is when i go onto my fone and i see the wee facebook with 1 , can anyone tell me how i get it to alert me to messages on it, thanxx
