Default A Few Upgrade Questions

Please Login to Remove!

Hey Everyone,
I've stepped away from Blackberries for a while as my role in the organization has changed so it's been a while since I've administrated our BES system. To give you a little bit of background information we are currently running what appears to be version 4.1.6.9. It is a standalone server and the server itself is using MSSQL 2000. We currently have about 84 active users and 120 CALs. I don't foresee the number of users increasing past 100 any time soon nor do I see us ever needing more then 110 users total. We have recently acquired media and licensing to install BES version 5 (enterprise not express) and I have been going though some documentation. When I upgraded from the old version of BES I used the in place upgrade option. After reviewing the documentation it appears that I am ok for all requirements of doing an in place upgrade with the exception to the fact that I have over 30 users on the BES itself. Is this normal? I have 84 users on the BES and everything runs fine. Does upgrading from 4.1 to 5.x mean that the server cannot manage as many users as it did before? Also, I see sql 2000 is fine for the database system. If I wanted to upgrade to 2005 on the same server, can I just stop the BES services, upgrade the database system, then restart the services?

Sorry for the assault of questions and thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Default Re: A Few Upgrade Questions

MSDE to SQL is usually a quick upgrade if you keep the same SQL name.

84 users is fine. BES can handle up to 2000 per server. (more or less depending on hardware etc)

inplace upgrade is fine, but best to make a new database to clear out the years of data built up in the database if you have been on 3.6 4.0 4.1 and now upgrading to 5.0
