I use Thunderbird on my Macs and it doesn't sync with the BB.
An alternative is to sync contacts and calendar with Google and then then use the Lightning add-in for calender with T-bird. And sync both T-Bird and the BB with Google.

If you want to sync your TBird contacts with your BB you have to use Zindus to sync them with GMail and then Google Sync (or check the sync contacts box in your Gmail account on BIS) to sync with your BB.

I can sync them thru outlook if I want to use a 3rd program but, was trying to avoid that?

Not enough Thunderbird users for RIM to have bothered with this. Apparently developers don't think the effort is worth it either.
Putting the Google cloud in the middle is a pretty simple way to get the sync you want. Small price to pay (it's free) for getting your sync on.

From the BB suite of the PC/Laptop I cannot synch with Spice Bird this is an open source equivalent of Outlook. there must be ways BB apps work with great open source programs. can some one help?

Nope, at least none that I am aware of. As said here and in many other similar posts, RIM only supports a few PIMS. Since Outlook has the largest installed base, it is the primary one.
An alternative is to sync contacts and calendar with Google and then sync our PDA/BB and PCs/Macs with Google.
Use Google or other search engine to see if you find something. Also check BB App World.
