I would also take normal precautions such as setting a password on your device.

Blackberry shield may be hitting the public soon, not sure on a time line.

BlackBerry Protect, you mean?

Also, try SmrtGuard or RobLock

They really don't "deter" theft, but these applications can do a quick backup of your device if lost or stolen as well as locate it by GPS. And they can disable your device with a password lock if you have not already done so.

I use Lookout security. If phone is missing, it can do the following:

- Pinpoint where your phone is on a map
- Activate a loud alarm to find phone
- Remotely wipe your data if phone is gone for good.

I tried both SmrtGuard and Lookout and both work as advertised but i think I will go with SmrtGuard because its all application based. but Lookout has a cool feature so you can let your device scream if you lost it in the house -
Both are good on GPS location/ tracking. which in turn depends on the accuracy of the GPS on the device.

Reading the LookOut site I noticed some functions do not work on the Bold units. Also I received a 907 COD error but do not have the App loaded so they may be blocking the download to do some fixing. It does look like a good App. I do have Where's my Phone loaded and it sees to work ok.
