I have been given a 8700r phone from a Canadian carrier. It doesn't have a sim card. I want to use a different carrier than the phone came from but the new carrier says it is not compatible with their service, no doubt because it is locked to the previous carrier. Can I unlock it without a sim card or can I put a sim card from the new carrier in it to unlock it or do I need to buy a sim card from the old carrier to unlock it first then buy one from the new carrier? Thanks in advance for you time and answers.

Its a GSM blackberry, are you trying to use it with a GSM carrier?
When they said "not compatible with their service" im wondering if they are a CDMA carrier.

It was/is a Rogers blackberry and I want to use Telus. They are now supposed to be or have a gsm network. The owner of the Telus shop says on even if I unlock the phone and use a Telus sim card it won't work. Not knowing too much about these tings I have no idea if he is right or wrong or just tring to sell me one of his phones with a contract. I appreciate the help/

They don't have a GSM network, they have a HSPDA (3G) network, and only a 3G blackberry can be used on it.
The 8700 isn't a 3G blackberry, so cannot be used on it.
