Default Wireless update finally implemented?

Please Login to Remove!

A few minutes ago my Verizon 8530 notified me that a wireless update was available, to go from 5.0.0.xxx to 5.0.0.738 if I remember correctly. It lets you customize the install by ticking/unticking boxes just as if you were to use DM to do the OS update. I went ahead and started it, apparently it's an 18mb download. Will report back with results.

Any news/reviews on this? I noticed the wireless update has been part of the OS for quite some time, even back on my pearl's 4.5 OS...yet it never worked until now.

I've done it on a few devices (from Sprint) and it worked fine. I usually tell people to expect to not use their device for 2 hours - the first hour to download the update, the 2nd hour to install the update.

Already at 35%, started right after finishing my first post...so hopefully it won't take that long. Only 18mb which is a bit weird considering the OS you download and install with DM is usually over 100mb...but I guess that's probably because it's the full install, and in DM you pick what you want out of it...and with the wireless update, it only downloads what you picked? No idea, honestly.

So wireless update has worked for other carriers, and Verizon is just now using it? I've never had that notification before, and any time I tried to manually use wireless update it wouldn't let me.

Wireless update is different in that it checks what's different between your current OS and the new OS and only downloads and updates those files. That's why it's smaller then a full blown OS you'd download to your PC.

The carrier's have to actually release the OS for you to download wirelessly, and they don't have them all out there....yet. I've found the wireless update to be about 1 update behind what you can download from the web.

Correct. The Wireless Update is only a delta update.

Verizon implemented Wireless Update many months ago. Sometime around when the Tour was first released.

Ah, so it just never yelled at me before because I was always running the most recent OS available in the 8500 section. Makes sense.

It looks as if it is updating me to the same OS that is posted for the 8530 in the 8500 section. It's my understanding that this OS, or the one right before it, killed reception for battery life. Hopefully that's either a false rumor, or it was put back to normal with the new OS.

ETA : 84% so far, not too bad for living on the outskirts of the 3g area where reception is spotty and unreliable.

So is this new version 5.0.0.738? If so, any difference between .738 and .734 (which is on Verizon's site?

Only difference I've noticed so far is when I'm hovered over the SMS icon on my homescreen, it displays info from each text over the background image...and I don't like it. Can't figure out how to make that go away.

I'd like to play with the new OS...is there any where to download it from? My BB is on a BES and has OTA updates disabled.
