Default Keyboard backlight on Tour 9630

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all, new to the forums. I recently purchased a blackberry tour from Verizon and have had it for about a month. One thing I've noticed is that the backlight on the keyboard has a mind of its own. Sometimes it will come on, but more often than not it won't turn on. The keyboard still works fine, but it has no backlight, which can be pretty annoying when I'm trying to use in a low lite place. I've looked all over on the phone for a setting to change it, but can't find anything about it! I'm starting to wondering if that phone is defective. Anyone else having this problem?? Thanks in advance.

Doesn't the tour have a light sensor on it? If it detects high level of ambient light it will not turn the keyboard back light on. If you're not getting it to come on in low light situations though there might be something screwy w/ the sensor.

I've noticed sometimes my screen brightness will self-adjust when it seems like it should not. Slowly moving the device around usually indicates it's picking up a beam of light. If I cover the LED on the front of the phone the backlighting adjusts.

Yeah same here. Usually at my work where the lighting is not that great. Its just the light sensor picking up low light and making the keypad and back light brighter. Not defect you good.

hey guys, thanks for the replies. Your right about the light sensor. I had no idea the phone had one. I tried it in a well lit area and no backlight. Then I went into a dark room, and sure enough it turned on. Thats pretty hi-tech and I'm impressed. I just wish there was a option to keep the keyboard light on all the time. But oh well. Thanks again!

Download BBLight from the Aftermarket Software section on this site. It has various options such as keeping the backlight on in various situations. "Always On" is an option, but not always good for battery life.

Hope this helps...

I bet if you put some scotch tape over the LED it would shield it enough to cause the light to come on but also let the LED color shine through. Keep lots of extra batteries around.

Why, by the way, do you want the keyboard backlight on in well-lit conditions?

You can turn off the auto dim backlight and it will keep the backlight on whenever you are using the phone no matter the conditions if that is what ya really want.

Having auto dim off and timeout set to 2 min is going to be the most you are going to be able to keep it on at one time.

My keyboard back light seems to go off when the lighting is dim (opposite of what it should). My RIG is to store a small piece of black electrical tape on the underside of my battery cover, then put it over the led when I'm in a low lit room like restaurant for instance. Until an OS fix.....

The last time I tried BBlight and Always on after market programs I found they will keep the screen on, but the keyboard dims so in lower light you see the screen but the keyboard lights go out. Thats when I decided to try and cover the sensor and see how it worked out.I have a Body Glove on my Tour. I just took a small piece of black plastic garbage bag and put it over the sensor under the Body Glove. I can still see the led light although not as bright as it was. Now my keyboard stays on if the screen is on no matter what. IT DOES USE BATTERY!!!! I can still get almost a full day with a standard battery. I have to make sure I close programs correctly and I do charge every night. If I am at my desk I have it plugged into thE USB. I bought the body glove cover locally when I first picked up the Tour, soon I will get the extended battery, new back cover and the new full case from Seidio. I had that set up with my curve and that battery is great, you can GPS and backlight all you want. The case is great also. CHEERS.....
