Going into level 16 with 12 lives is not too bad, once you get past that one you will get an opportunity to get more. First time through it will take about 20 lives to clear, you just have to wait for the gods of chance to give you a bunch of "life farms" in the earlier levels.
As far as the trackball jumps from the side wall, from my experience this is OE--Operator Error...you are likely suffering from thumb twitches, and depending on the sensitivity of your ball, the smallest pressure change can cause the cursor to shift. My solution is to remove the thumb from the cursor every so often, or consciously keep pressure in the desired direction. It certainly is a pain when it happens at the wrong moment--believe me, I speak from experience.
Of more annoyance is when the ball turns into a ghost for a pass or two, just passing through bricks as if they weren't there--talk about unexpected bounces and directions that result. My most interesting result from this was a passthrough one level, hit a brick in the next, and come out again, leaving a void surrounded by unbroken bricks--was actually kind of neat...
