Default 2-year versus 1-year contract for aa 8900

Please Login to Remove!

Sounds like most people here upgrade with 2-year contracts. Yet, I would think most people hanging out here are into the latest and greatest gizmos, and that makes the 2-year contract choice puzzling. I pay TMO an extra $50 each year for a 1-year contract knowing I can't/won't wait 2 years for a new toy. My 8900 just cost me $199 after the rebate versus $149 if I had re-upped for 2 years. I justify some of the added cost by the fact I always have a phone that is under warranty and I am never tempted to pay $400 or $500 for a gotta-have-it phone in the middle of a 2-year contract. Can any of you 2-year contract holders who like me can't really wait 2 years explain your logic for doing a 2-year deal? The math doesn't work, does it?

Actually, a lot of people here have the 1 year contracts. It's not just being able to get a new phone more frequently at a subsidized price (because I'm just as likely to buy unlocked) but to keep my options more open.

I just purchased a 3rd 8900 from TMO without having to resign for 2 yrs...and I got it for $99! I simply told the rep that I wanted another BB, and didnt want to pay more than $79 for it (there is an upgrade plan on wireless.crackberry.com)...we settled at $99. I got the phone today.

I go for the 2-year contract because it is the lowest price. With AT&T, you can do an early upgrade after 6 months and get another device at the 2-year price. An early upgrade costs $75, but that ain't bad. I have also bought devices via eBay and the forums.

It comes down to weighing your need for a really great price on a new device against your overall satisfaction with your carrier. If you would be staying for a couple of years anyway, it's a no-brainer. However, if you have enough "pain points" with your current carrier to consider switching in the near-term, you may want to think it over.
