I can scroll through my unread messages on the smaller screen and they will open if I set on them for a few seconds. Once they are open, is there a way to scroll through them or take any other actions (such as deleting them) without opening the phone?

If you are not playing music, then you can use the volume buttons to scroll through unopened message (but this wont work on BB msn... you will only view the last msg)
Other than scrolling you cant do anything else.... sorry.... delete them later on when you're able to open the phone.
