You need to call your carrier. This is a carrier function not a phone function.

I am surprised that the technology would not allows us to have this control.

Carriers want to be able to manage this because of the potential impacts to network capacity. The theory is that a connected call that is unanswered by either a human or a VM is wasted bandwidth in the network. So, they want some control over the amount of "ring time" in the system. I can see that to a point, but it's always seemed a little Draconian to me.

The technology exists, but most providers choose not to allow it.

My first phone on SK Telecom, a Samsung V740, would ring for one minute before going to voicemail, which was awesome! Further, my phone actually had an "Answering Machine" application on it that would actually answer the phone call and take the message rather than using SKT's VM system. I ended up using this instead. On the off-chance that I had no service (which is extremely rare in SK) or my phone was off, I also would receive a text message when I missed calls with the numbers of the people that called when I regained service.

You could try following these steps:
Increase amount of rings before voicemail - BlackBerryFAQ

Then as stated above, you will need to contact your carrier.

Understood, so maybe that link should be for GSM only.

Did you follow the link and read the instructions? Option 1 is call the carrier. Option 2 is *61 for GSM.
