The actual player code modules are identical from .70 to .72. The parts that changed were in relation to player registration. They were toying with making it work through the audible desktop app like other devices.
I have still not heard anything substantial yet on what is coming. I even offered to sign an NDA and keep my mouth shut... No go. I keep getting "...coming soon". I still think they are completely dumping the old app and have a rewrite in the works.

Unfortunately, that is their style. I had an ongoing dialog with them for the Windows Mobile client app, requesting support of Format 4 files. First they tried to tell me that the phone will not support that high quality (I pointed out that I can play 192kb/s encoded MP3 files no problem), then they said format 4 takes up too much space and I should not want it (I pointed out that most of those phones support SD cards); finally, they said "we are working on something new that you will like, which will be ready before the end of the year (this was said in March of 2007); and we will let you know when it is ready" - that was some 18 months ago, and nothing new came out so far. It seems to be their way of saying "just shut up and go away". I almost cancelled my subscription, I was so frustrated. But, I discovered that I could easily burn CDRWs and rip them to MP3 (a bit tedious, but it does work fine), and that gave me a way to get higher quality audio. If this client gets too bothersome, I will go back to doing that, I guess.

I did end up cancelling my subscription. I was tired of being frustrated while listening. I actually called Audible to cancel (rather than doing it via the web). I waited to be asked why I was cancelling. They didn't bother - and I didn't volunteer.

I definitely understand your angst and your decision.
For me Audible is about the Audio Books. The fact that they have a player for the BlackBerry is merely a convenience. I was a customer long before they had it.
Bottom line for me is that I am going to continue listening. The only decision to make is how I listen to them. Through the different revisions, the client for the BlackBerry has gone from completely unbearable to just merely crappy. However, it isn't quite crappy enough that I want to carry a second device.

I agree. But I don't like carrying multiple devices. So I've been getting Audio Books from the library - ripping them as MP3s and listening on the BB. Not as convenient and I miss the NYT subscriptions but there are other podcasts. When Audible comes out with a more stable version for the BB I'll probably go back.

Not that I will mention them here, but there are ways to do the same with audible files without burning to CD first. My previous player was an Archos and there is no audible client for it

Stability?
Hey, sowhynot, I wanted to find out about the stability issue that you raised. What are you referring to here? Is this about the memory dropping down to zero, as was reported a while ago on this thread? If so, I must say that based on about a week's usage, this does not seem to be the case at all with the current release. I am a very heavy user of audiobooks, because i have approx. 1 hour of commute each way, and I also exercise for about 45 minutes while listening to audiobooks. So, if there was a problem, I would surely have seen it, since I have been using the thing close to 3 hours each day.
I am probably using it differently than you. I run Mobiola xPlayer in the background to redirect audio to bluetooth. I run the AudibleAir app in the foreground when I am listening, but when I am done, I DON'T exit the app. Rather, I just hit the pause button, and switch applications to the Home screen. So, the AudibleAir just waits in the background paused at the right spot, until I switch back to it. If I ever need to reboot (which I never have to), I just bookmark on the Audible so I can get back to the spot. I have also button mapped the Camera button to the Application Switcher so I can switch back and forth quickly. (I don't use the camera function hardly ever).
Hope this helps out. This seems to be working out fine for me, all except for the occasional audio glitches which are just annoying, not affecting the intelligibility of the book.

In my experience, the stability varies per book. More correctly, per audible encoding method. Over the years, they have altered their encoding process. Some glitch up pretty badly, others work nearly flawlessly.

And I think the stablity also varies depending upon which BB and which O/S you're using - in addition to the Audible Player app. I found it better with the latest .72 release but it was still problematic for me. I really tried for over a year to make it work.

I have been using audible now for audio books for about a month now, and am frustrated. Every so often the volume will pause for a second and seemingly skip forward about a second or 2 in the book. Anyway to fix this? Also, why doesn't my phone ring when i'm listening to audible? I see the caller id but now ring or vibrate? Bizarre.

Nothing seems out of place. I really don't have an answer for you. You might try 4.5.0.81... I am running it now on my 8820 and have none of the problems you describe. However, as discussed elsewhere in this thread, audible air mileage varies depending on the particular book you are listening to. Their encoding method has changed a bit over the last 10 years.

No subscriptions
My subscriptions aren't showing up, so I don't have the option to set download times, etc. Any ideas on what may have changed since I upgraded the OS?

I'm still on the old audible plan from 8 years ago. two books for $12/mo. No subscriptions because they didn't exist then. I have no way of testing that. Maybe someone else can jump in on this one.

BOLD!!!!
I updated to a BlackBerry 9000 (Bold) on Friday. Wow! The device is awesome. The audible player looks a bit odd on it since it isn't aware of the resolution bump. However, it seems to work a lot better. Books download more consistently. I downloaded a full book over the mobile network with no trouble. The player buffering is much improved due to the speed of the processor.
Anyone hearing anything out of the Audible camp lately? If you can't say what, I would be curious just to know whether you are hearing anything at all.

Great news on the bold, Grimlin! I still can't figure out how to configure mine for downloads with the new OS.
Haven't heard anything from audible.
