However, it is clear Apple focused on a "world" phone (therefore GSM) and that leaves out Verizon and Sprint for the time being. AT&T is actually showing some restraint to my eyes because the new pricing is really no different than any of their smartphones (in other words everyone gets screwed equally).

Actually I carry around in my backpack an ipod charger, which also works for my iphone. It's just like carying around another battery :P except I can just plop in 2 double A's and I'm good to go.

dstrauss, I disagree. I have two batteries for my BB 8830 with Verizon and carry the spare on trips. Verizon has overall far better coverage in the USA than does AT & T (certainly where I travel such as parts of upstate NY where AT & T has little or no coverage).

I have a spare battery and sometimes I need it, but most of the time I don't. But the fact is Apple choose to not make it field swappable for a reason, they don't want you to and therefore the battery will need serving at a $$$ from Apple. They could very well design it with a swappable battery and whether you need one or not the battery is the last place you should be screwing your customers on.

I don't think the removable battery is such a big deal. I guess it keeps the size down and sleeker as the battery is probably molded to the case. Apple is Apple, you know you're getting something that is sexy and expensive. There was a recent article on cnet about comparable upgrades for an Apple PC costing 200% more than on a Dell PC. Yet Apple's market share continues to grow.
Accessories are a big business, think of how many batteries they'd sell for people that want a second "just in case". Not defending Apple, I think they are overpriced but well thought out and some people are willing to pay for that. I'm pissed that I can't get a car charger for an Apple Macbook Air (non removable battery) because the connector is proprietary and Apple won't license it, or I can't get a bluetooth ipod.
If I could swap my SIM chip into an iphone for after-hours, I'd buy one in a second. But the amount of email I need to send, I need a good keypad and the touch screen doesn't cut it. Paying another $30 a month for iphone data just isn't worth it when I have to carry a blackberry anyway.
Regards-Michael G.

These major companies need to stop put restriction on us as consumers. We paid for a product at high price (up front) or over a period of time. We should not be restricted by any carrier or manufacture.
We as consumers give these peps there millions and make the products #1. What do we get back in return.......still paying the cost one way or the other.

On the new bandwidth recently auctioned off by the FCC there cannot be restrictions placed by carriers on what devices are used (no more tying the iPhone to ATT in other words). And the battery can be removed/changed in the iPhone, people just don't want to mess with it. If they can do it then you can do it!

I don't carry my spares with me, but I have a spare for virtually every phone I have, as well as standalone chargers for them. If I get home from work and the battery is mostly discharged, I slip a charged battery in it, and put the dying battery in the charger. That way, if I get or make calls throughout the evening, I'm not tethered to a USB/power cord. I really like Apple and their products, but is that simple concept so hard for them to understand?

I don't think that is the case. Using Lithium ion polymer batteries let you better fit a tight case (just think of the volume taken by the Curve battery). For that matter think how crummy the fit of the back door is on the Curve, Blackjack, etc. Yu are one of the few people I've ever heard field swapped a battery anyway.

Why are you waiting? It's already been released by several carriers, any of which will work on your 8310.

you must not know many people or something then. A lot of people in my company carry spares, along with my friends and myself. I have no beef with the fit of the door on the curve either, in fact i think its a great design. It fits tight and doesn't wiggle and comes off pretty easily.

A couple of things---Apple has become a huge company and has the resources to release product at a very steady rate. RIM is much smaller. Having said that, RIM had better quicken the pace. They sold 1,000,000 Iphones on the first weekend of the release. A staggering number. In my mind, RIM shouldn't announce anything until two weeks before release. Any other strategy just disappoints consumers and hurts RIM competitivity.

RIM needs to get the Bold right, therefore my assumption is they put all their software efforts on it currently. Consequently less efforts on the other devices for next couple weeks. End August sound realistic to launching the updates for the the other devices.

Somehow, I doubt AT&T will be one of those carriers. Maybe the money is in the iPhone and they can't be bothered...

It has already been released by many carriers so why worry when your certain carrier is releasing it? Be a little crazy and even try out a beta...lol.

RIM sells millions of devices every year. And on current pace they are adding nearly 10 million customers a year. These are not even just device sales, these are customers that are NEW customers to RIM. Currently they sit at 16million+ active customers. How many replacement devices how many upgrades are done in a given year on the BlackBerry? RIM is the number one PDA manufacturer worldwide and its not even close. Apple sits somewhere between third and fourth. RIM releases multiple devices per year. 8110/8120/8330/9000/9500/8900/8220 all will be out this year. Apple releases one phone per year. What exactly does RIM need to "quicken the pace"?
Not to mention... OS 4.5 has been out for most of the GSM models for quite some time.
