Might as well download now......As always, with GMaps it's best to remove the old first then install the new.

Edit: Likewise-nothing new stands out. Have to try it out on a drive.

Nothing does. VZW has it locked out.

Sprint does not have it locked out though, and I use this for all other GPS enable applications with no need for a puck.

Wish someone over at Google would figure that out.

On the website it's making a big deal about it now having traffic data.

From the Google site:

Real-time traffic xxx8212; See where the congestion is, and estimate delays in over 30 major US metropolitan areas.

It now keeps the screen always on when connected to the GPS, similar to the BBMaps application.

I just noticed a sponsored result when I did a search (hotels in Gainesville, FL). Don't know if this is new with this version, but new to me.

Not sure what you are talking about, but it's an IMPOSSIBILITY to use GPS in the 8703e or 8830 on Verizon. You would need an external PUCK.

There is nothing for Google to figure out, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE.

Sprint however, allows the GPS to be used.

This is probably just me but when I try to connect to www.google/gmm I get an HTTP Error 400: Bad Request. In the details it says Unable to determine IP address from host name. I am on a BES and I have tried both browsers on my 8703e.

Update: When I searched for Google Maps using Google I was able to get to the page without an error. Still gives me the error when I try to go directly to google/gmm. Strange.

It didn't do that on mine... Is there a setting to flag now?

OK, I figured out how it works. In Google Maps, press "0" to have it center & follow your current location. The screen stays on as long as you're moving. Once you stop, say at a red light, the screen times out and turns off, but it turns back on automatically once you're moving again. Pretty nifty programming.

If you read my post, you will see I say Sprint, and let me say this clear IT IS POSSIBLE ON THE SPRINT 8703e, but this app does not support the internal GPS, nor does it appear to support the Nextel 7100i and 7520 internal GPS like other apps do (It is possible on these as well, but the Google app is not making the API calls).

I wouldn't use this for Nav anyway, only search and traffic. Which by the way was available in previous versions.

I really only use it for Sat view, traffic and some searches.

TeleNav blows it away with Nav, lowest gas, and other stuff that wouldn't even compare even if I used a puck.

Am I missing something that Google does versus TeleNav (other than being free)?

But you also said, "Wish someone over at Google would figure that out." in response to someone indicating that VZW had the internal GPS locked out.

This implies that you believe Google can do something to enable the internal GPS feature on a Verizon 8703e.
What jungleland (and myself) is saying is that there's nothing that Google can do to enable the internal GPS on a Verizon 8703e.

O'kay, I see how that could have been misunderstood (my bad). We're clear now though right?

Google should write their application to take advantage of internal GPS on devices that support this feature (Sprint, Nextel, and some of the newer devices possibly). Verizon will probably eventually open up their APIs for developers.
