Default DST Disaster Story

What's yours?

I screwed up my CEO's BlackBerry. He didn't get any e-mail for a couple of hours.

I originally pushed the 1.5 patcher to his BB but it didn't take so pushed the 2.3 patcher to him. Sure enough he was one of the few that had a problem and had to do a hard reset. His assistant says he stop getting mail in the morning but he didn't report the issue until about 10 hours later.

Did you check his date/time/timezone info? I've had several people who were not receiving emails and it was because their timezone information was incorrect. The emails were on the device, but not sorted correctly.

Ditto. I have seen the exact same thing. Correct the time/date and suddenly they release they were getting emails all along.

I managed to make bricks out of 2 of my companies BB's. Luckly they were under warranty and easy exchanges. I couldn't even get the trick to work that you remove the battery and hook it up to the desktop manager to reinstall the software. Both of these issues happened while trying to do a wired update.

I wasted a precious hour on a Cingular "blue line" 7290 trying to upgrade the OS to 4.1. The backup went okay but the restore failed, leaving him with a loss of 200 messages.

He didn't really care about that...and that's when I noticed on the BES his carrier "AWS" (AT&T Wireless)...we're trying to migrate users from those lines to Cingular "orange" lines which are more reliable. So I kicked it over to telecom to order a new handset. :(

you could have restored the messages database after the app load

Backup & Restore > Advanced > open backup file > Restore Messages database

Ya tried that several times...the messages even "appeared" to load 221 in database file, 221 on handset but user claimed they were not showing on handset. I checked for filters, etc.

patched an archaic 6280 today. well, gave it new handheld code to 4.0 first and then ATTEMPTED to patch. the blackberry died giving me the stupid 502 error code with the cassette symbol. luckily we have spares so i just gave him a out-of-the box dst ready 7290.

We are usually having trouble with the 7520 and 7290 the date and time goes backwards on them. Simple fix tell them to go to options, date and time, make sure they are on the right time zone and click on wheel copy network time or update time.

oh, which disaster story should i tell. Hmmmm, how about how I spent 8 hours on ONE handheld yesterday trying to get the freggin patch to download. He has a 7100 with original handheld OS from probably 2 years ago. I couldnt download the patch, so I upgraded the handheld OS. Then the dang thing crapped out during the restore process, wouldnt activate wirelessly or through the desktop manager. When I finally got it to activate, the guy had 3800 phone logs to synch over to his handheld. It was taking 7 mins to synch 100 phone logs over. It locked up during the first activation, so I wiped and started again. Yep, total waste of a day. I finally got to eat my breakfast at 6pm yesterday!

Ugh, given your time and lost productivity, it would have been cheaper to hook him up with an 8800.

We only have 38 users on this Bes. I succesfully pushed down the 36 patches to the test group and then the users. Then I pushed to the GM and Pres. 1 was successfull. Guess who's BB turned into a paperweight? Guess who doesn't remember to go to the gym everyday at 11:00 unless his BB tells him to? Guess who, after I breathed life into the damn 8100 that died, went home and vpn'd in from their home computer that never got updated? Guess who is incessant about keeping old emails off their device and couldn't delete any emails previous to the day the device died? Guess who is the only person that REALLY relies on the calendar in Outlook and on the BB?.....
Well it wasn't the GM.
'nuff said.
