Default Auto on/off feature?

What does this do? Advantages/disadvanages? Is it a hard power off reset or a soft reset? Do you set it to auto on/off everyday or just weekends? I heard it's bad for the phone and battery to turn it on and off frequently. I get a solid 2 to 2 1/2 days of battery life, but if I can get more using the auto on/off feature, I may try it.

I use this feature, and the only caveat is when the time changes twice a year. You have to disable it then to allow the network to reset the time, or else you'll have to do it manually.
One thing I have noticed is that my battery life is less when I am not home. It's almost as if the device goes into a "high transmit power" mode when it's out of its primary service area.

I heard it's not good for the phone and/or battery to turn it on and off frequently. Is this true?
