On the 8100, I removed the battery to reset the device and now the back wont lock closed. Any suggestions?

It's tricky, with mine i just had to apple more pressure, ensure that its lined up. Also you might have to push the button that releases the back door to open up the hinge then push it in and lock it. Hope it works

did you lose the little silver clasp that secures the door in place? it goes between the two gold contacts on the bottom of the back.

no - it all seems intact but for some reason it wont lock shut. I can slide it open without pressing down the silver lock button.

Sounds like it's time for some duct tape! Kidding aside, bring it in to Tmo/Cingular whichever carrier you have and see if they can fix it or try a different back piece on it.
