Smile Pearl Won't Power On!

Please Login to Remove!

While attempting to update the software on my T-Mobile Pearl. I walked away while it was backing up, came back and there was an error message saying that the update could not be completed because the device could not be contacted or something of that sort.

Now, the LCD will not come on and the indicator light just flashes red!

The battery was fully charged before I started and I am using USB 2, so it should be charging off the computer during the update.

I have removed my SIM (had to put it into another phone) and my 1 GB SD card and, in the process, removed and re-inserted the battery. Still doing the same.

Please help!

Did you try removing the battery and re-inserting it?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7130/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

It's very important to start with the battery fully charged. Then while you perform the update keep the charger plugged in. This will take care of the problem.

I did remove the battery and it still does not work. Battery was fully charged before I started and I am using USB 2, so it should be charging off the computer during the update.

Sounds like your USB connection was lost in the middle of your update and you will need to re-install the OS. Do a search under JL Comander (I think)

yeah, if the LED is blinking in some sort of Morse Code at you, that means the OS is not installed (but the Bootrom is). You need to reload the OS and applications onto the device. search the forums for how to do this.
Alternately, if your LED is on continuously (eg: no blinking), you may be screwed.

Yeah, that sounds like a botched install and it won't boot. A clean install like the guy said should do the trick.

agreed. something sorta similiar happened to my brother. he was attempting to update the OS to the .64 (this was before .67 was out) and the computer for whatever reason restarted in the middle of the update. well we restarted the desktop and it looked like it simply continued where it was interrupted. after it was done, which took about an hour!, everything was in b/w, the graphical gui looked it was some cheap ascii constructed thing. I did a search and tried the steps in recovering from such a disaster!

Wipe the handheld using JL_CMDR (search the forums, you'll find it easily) then run desktop manager again and run Application loader and it will reload the OS.

My usb connection has been flaky all along (the connect-disconnect tones happen several times in a row), but it's usually been able to load up music and back up alright. But when I tried to upgrade, it did the rapid-tone thing again. 2-3 attempts later (each time with the tones), it won't power on, the red light blinks, and even though the connect-tone sounded, the Desktop Manager can't "detect" the device and the computer menu bar doesn't show any device connected.

Tmobile said they would send another one. I would try what you said, but hopefully the new one will have a better usb connection. and yes, I have tried different cables. In the meantime, no phone....

First, make sure you are not using a USB Hub. Connect the BB directly to a USB port on the computer. Then right click on "My Computer", click "Properties", go to the "Hardware" tab and click on the button that says device manager and scroll to the bottom to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Right click on each instance of USB Root Hub and click "Properties", click on the power management tab and make sure the box next to "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not checked. Do this for each instance of USB Root Hub. This has bitten me more than once.

If that doesn't help then you may have had a bad device. You can also try other USB ports on the computer.

One last note, be sure that when you install the Desktop Manager and the OS version to the PC that the BB is NOT connected. If the BB is connected the drivers may not install correctly. Good luck
