Question Do you need mobile network connection for WiFi to work?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I currently work in an area where the mobile reception is terrible and non-existent most of the time. The company has arranged for WiFi hotspot and I thought great - now I can actually get my BB emails and use BBM.

However, I realised that even though I connect and login to the WiFi hotspot and the coverage is great, the above services don't always work. Indeed I checked the Service Status on my 9700 and the BIS shows as Not Connected.

So my question is - does the BB have to have at least some connection to the mobile network for your BIS to utilise the WiFi connection?

No, it shouldn't need the mobile connection at all to get the data part working.

It sounds like there is a problem connecting fully to the hotspot. In the WiFi area of options there is an addition menu (use the BB key) and there are WiFi diagnostics which will show whether it has managed to get an IP etc.

You will also be able to check the signal strength of the WiFi. Blackberrys have a habit of showing connected to WiFi even when the signal is so poor that no data will be sent or received correctly.
