hello today i got the new desktop manager, i have just gone into the applications column from the left hand side. it is saying i need to do an core update on the phone (blackberry 4.6 core applications) it doesn't let me do this though. It says application memory exceeded. On my phone i don't have enough application memory but have loads of internal memory because my phone already has 1gb. What is this application memory, and surly i should be able to install this core applications update

You are going to need to free up some memory, probably. Take a look at free memory in options > status now, then do a battery pull with the power on for at least 30 seconds, and check again.

If you've downloaded a ton of app's, think about what you really need and get rid of the rest. Same with themes. And if you have stored media files (images, audio, video) in main memory instead of on a micro SD media card, move it to the media card or at least copy it off to a computer or delete it.

i have not downloaded any apps or themes. all i downloaded before was face-book app but i deleted it now. so what's wrong. and what do i exactly do with a battery pull

A battery pull--in other words a hard reset--will free up memory. Your available memory will be greatest afterward, and decline some after you've used the device, depending on the apps that you have open and running. If you have something running that is causing a memory leak, you could see available memory drop significantly after a battery pull.

If you haven't installed any additional apps or themes, no media files in main memory, and you've done a hard reset and still have the same error, then I don't know the answer.

doesn't the bold 9000 have less application memory than other blackberrys? also if i do this battery pull and have enough memory then do the update wont that leave no memory left. because when i do a soft reset... alt,shift,backspace it frees up to about 32mb
if i use that to do the update there will be none left? correct?

Don't know about the 9000... You can look it up and compare.

I was interested in the change in available memory before and after the battery pull. Either way, significant or not, would be good information, but a huge change would be a clue to look for a problem app causing a memory leak. The solution if you want the upgrade would have been to delete that app.

What is the free memory amount anyway? Cut and past it here in a post.

And you say you haven't added any apps or themes, but what about data on the device? Are you keeping your messages forever? Do you have a huge calendar? Tons of notes?.... I tend to think something is taking up that memory and stick with my orginal suggestio that you are going to have to free up some memory.

pp no i dont have a huge amount of notes or anything really. not many messages. i think the bold 9000 only has like 256mb of app memory. could you please have a look. much appreciated. i will do a battery pull tommorow

Looks to me the 9000 is a 128MB device, not 256. BlackBerry Bold 9000 - Full phone specifications.

If you are trying to upgrade to a newer OS version released for your device model, it will fit on the device, but probably leave you with less free memory than you had before.

Bottom line, the only way I know to interpret the error you posted is that you need to free up some memory. I've given you what tips I know.

You could do a full backup to save your data. If you have paid apps you want to backup, see blackberryfaq.com for directions, but you say you haven't downloaded any apps. After the backup, do a security wipe and select to delete all apps. Then do the upgrade, restore your data, and then decide what apps to restore until your file free is about as low as you dare make it.

Correct, the 9000 is 128MB app memory.

You need the free space for it to DO the update, but its updating that amount of space, so you won't lose anymore memory, it will overwrite the files in question.

Ditto.... I wasn't clear. What 'Draven says.... The new OS will overwrite the old, but it will likely be a little bigger.

Still, the upgrade will fit. You will have to be judicious about the number of apps and themes you choose to install and decide what you really, really need and forget the rest.
