So..am at home. the other night decided to try out the wifi set up and found that it worked just fine...after turning off the mobile network in manage connectioins. However in the mnorning I had forgotten to turn that aspect back on & missed a cpl of calls before I realized it was not turned on.

So now, I'm back at home and both the mobile network and wifi are on. Question becomes, when here with a wireless moden at work, will the device default to the wifi setting as opposed to the mobile network for internet type communications..??

If so, why..??
Just by testing this, it seems that BBM works with wifi, as does e-mail but txt and regular dial phone will not...kewl! yea yea..this is discovery night here ok..?? Lol

So..?? no one knows whether wi-fi or the cell network takes precedence within the onfines of ones own home.?

if one or the other does, is it based on signal strength or what..??

Comon., someone must know this..?

Overview

Automatic Wi-Fi® Selection Mode is the default mode for BlackBerry smartphones. Automatic Wi-Fi Selection Mode allows the BlackBerry smartphone to switch automatically to an appropriate Wi-Fi network when the BlackBerry smartphone user moves through Wi-Fi coverage areas. The BlackBerry smartphone selects Wi-Fi networks based on the order on the Saved Wi-Fi Profiles list.

Manual Wi-Fi Selection Mode allows the BlackBerry smartphone user to select the Wi-Fi networks to which the BlackBerry smartphone will attempt to connect.

To switch between automatic and manual Wi-Fi® Selection Mode, complete the following steps:

In Options, click Wi-Fi Connections.
Highlight the Wi-Fi Selection Mode field.
Press the Menu key.
From the Wi-Fi Connections menu, click Change Option.
Click a Wi-Fi Selection Mode.
Press the Menu key.
From the Wi-Fi Connections menu, click Save to change the Wi-Fi Selection Mode.



To optimize the Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) voice service on a Wi-Fi® enabled BlackBerry smartphone, the following settings are recommended on the Wi-Fi network:

Configure all access points for Delivery Traffic Indication Map (DTIM) to 2.
Turn on Wireless MultiMedia (WMM) and make sure that voice traffic is prioritized (that is, the UMA voice traffic is marked and it is prioritized over the wireless local area network (WLAN) link).
Make sure the latest firmware update for the wireless router is applied from the vendor.

tsac's information is great, but not applicable to the 9000 with doesn't have UMA or the connection preference option.

OP, If browser set to internet browser, it will usually use the faster connection. This can be seen at the top of the browser (pressing U will toggle the bar) and you will see which connection you are on.

To make sure of browsing via wi-fi, change it to Hotspot borwser, which can only use wi-fi.

And yes, texts and calls go over the mobile network, so when you disabled it, they stopped.

So applications will only ever use carrier network, but in general if the wi-fi connection is faster, the BB will default to using it for data.
