I held them both side by side the other day in a local Bell store. The 9700 is noticeably smaller, not unlike the Tour. The camera setup looks different too and of course the trackpad is a huge departure. That being said, I thought the 9000 felt more solid and went with it. No regrets at all.
A huge reason why I went with the 9000 (outside of the fact it was $150 less on a 3 year plan) was that it will work with most of the charger accessories I have kicking around. I have a lot of mini-USB chargers and charger cords around, both at home and the office (not to mention the car). I also use them to charge my Motorola handsfree and my GPS.
Getting a 9000 was a no-brainer for me. The smaller size was not an attraction to me. I used a 7250 and an 8830 in the past and the 9000 is small enough for me. I also like the trackball for the most part so the trackpad didn't do it for me. The 3.4 MP camera is not an attraction either as I use a real camera when I want to take a real photo. A camera in a phone is a gadget, not a serious photographic tool to me. 2.0 MP is more than enough for my needs.
Before I made the final decision to go with the 9000, I found lots of posts on this and other sites of people who went 9700 and then reverted back to the 9000. I think it's a great BB. I like it so much, I got my wife one too for 12/25.
