I'm very sorry if this has been asked and answered already in another thread. I have been reading threads for about 30 minutes now at work and have sort of found my answer but had another specific one.
Obviously, AT&T is going to tell me not to load an OS on my bold that is not approved by AT&T. Nevertheless, all of the OS's that are available on blackberry forums are approved by RIM (correct me if i'm wrong). So isn't it reasonable to beleive that ANY OS released by RIM should not have an issue on AT&T or any carrier for that matter?
These questions lead me to wonder if there is any risk installing a high OS than the one that AT&T posts....
There isn't major issue but there will some feature that may be enable but doesn't work on the AT&T network. An example of such is Visual Voice Mail.
Visual Voice Mail will be installed but it doesn't work on AT&T. With VMM installed you will not get voice mail notifications. There are workarounds for this.
No, Visual Voicemail may still be installed as part of the OS.
This is the case with .244 (i think) but not with the latest OS, where it appears to doesn't install due to recognising the vendor code properly.
the workaround for visual voicemail not being installed to the phone is to remove the .cod files from the java folder on the PC.

This is the point. In OS .244 visual voicemail was installed, despite AT&T not supporting it.
That was because .244 was not an AT&T released OS, it was released by another carrier that had visual voicemail.
It was installed automatically as part of the OS, and couldn't be unchecked.
You also cant hide or uninstall it, via the regular way like applications.
You have to remove the .cod files from the java folder so it wouldn't be installed.
This appears not to be a problem with .282, as the .alx file doesn't have the vendor code for AT&T on it, so recognising your vendor code, it won't install.

Other than something like that, there shouldn't be any problems installing the newest OS even though AT&T hasn't "OK'd" it. I was just debating installing the new one and if it would create any issues.
AT&T has approved the BlackBerry Bold Release (v4.6.0.508). This release, which provides several enhancements, will become publically available on August 25, 2009 including via OTA.
Check out BlackBerry OS or Berry Review for more info.
thank you AClayeJ, i will wait for that since it is right around the corner. Then agian, RIM and AT&T hardly ever release something when they say they will.
