Umm, I would just ask her. The only way you can get into his or her phone is by physicly getting the phone and looking (that I know of) it sucks that it could be going on but that's what I would do is just ask. Sorry I'm not much help.

No, you cannot "get into" your friend's address book unless you can physically look at the device.

And have the password if one is set on the device.

If the friend synced the contacts to a program like Outlook. You will need to look at that person's computer

You know what? 20 years ago, I thought one of my previous girlfriends was having an affair with my friend. I asked her if she was @#%@-ing around with him. Turned out, all the secrecy and sneaking around was her planning a huge suprise birthday party for me. Boy, did I feel bad. We did break up a year after that, though, over a different matter.
______________
On this, though, I would ask her, like: "You seem to be spending a lot of time with Bob. Is there something that I should know about?"
Then stare into her eyeballs. If something is going on, you will know if she is lying.

We can agree to disagree, but I think the OP is seeking tech assistance, NOT a Dr. Phil moment

True, but in my opinion, communicating is the way to deal with this. Sneaking around to find the friend's address book (which will only add to the suspicion and not prove anything) will only make matters worse if you ask me.

Yesssss, but someone has already stated he posted because he wanted tech. advice, so if you can't give him that then don't reply........;0)
To the OP, the responses you have so far are correct you need to have the device (unlocked) to be able to obtain any info....

Yep... the Dr. Phil moments are provided for free as a service to our brand new members, above and beyond the answers to the question asked.

Geez, how hard is it to keep your Dear Abbie opinions to yourselves if you're not going to answer the actual question that was asked??
To the OP, it's simple (assuming your friend has a Blackberry - you don't actually say). Some time when you're with your friend, ask him if you can borrow his phone to make a call. Tell him you need to call your wife. Leave your own phone in your car or something to make the request legit. Dial your wife's # and hit Send. If her # is in his address book, after you hit send, it will show on the display with whatever name he has it programmed in under. If the display just shows the # without showing any name, then it's not in his Address Book.
I think this will actually work for just about any cell phone, not just a Blackberry.

Yup and if it wasn't in there before, it is now

Ummm, no. That won't put it in the guy's Address Book. It will put it in the guy's Call Log, but that was not what was asked about.
Furthermore, if there is hanky panky going on, the "friend" already has her #. If there is not hanky panky going on, then the OP probably doesn't have any reason to worry NOW about leaving his wife's # in the guy's phone's call log. If he IS worried about that, he can just not tell the "friend" who he's calling. If the # isn't in the friend's phone already, then he won't know whose number the guy called and won't have any reason to "capture" the # from his Call Log.

Of course, if they are cheating and he calls his wife from his friend's phone, the way she answers her phone may tell him a lot more than he wants to know...

StuartV has the best answer so far.
But using that logic, wouldn't it be easier to get a hold of your wife's phone and see if your friend's number is in there? And if it is, the call log for that number should be available... It's in your hands now, XCR_ALAN :o
