Default Need some suggestions from seasoned BB abusers!

Please Login to Remove!

OK, this is my first BB. I've experienced a few of the problems that other ppl have posted about but for the most part i really enjoy it. I wanted to start this thread for longtime and experienced users to throw out some suggestions on different things to do with our BB's. I read about things ppl do when they first get a device to make it run better/faster, but no real specifics. Different apps that ppl find the most useful, ect... everyones input is appreciated!

I discovered NBC-2.com which is the Fort Myers, FL local NBC affiliate and their mobile web site is superb for checking just about any flight world-wide and also sports scores.

Default My list

Unsure if I'll remember them all but whenever I get a new BB (every 6-8 months) I go through the following:

Delete any of the carrier related apps, themes etc.
Delete any sample audio,video
Delete any apps I don't use*
*you need desktop manager and the firmware OS to connect the device and really dig through the list of files that could be loaded. Dump all the other languages, password keeper if you don't plan to use it etc
Tweak all the settings on the device
- screen backlight brightness down (I use 10)
- side key assignment (I use messages and calendar)
- adjust the backlight timeout (I use 45)
- turn off LED coverage indicator
- Key rate to fast
- audible roll to mute
- menu style - full

Set the auto On/Off schedule (I do sleep)
Change the mobile network technology to 1XEV (I never leave the states)
Set my Owner information
Security Options
- Adjust the Other messages color

Messages
Options / General Options
- Hide filed messages - YES (I use a PST)
- SMS and Email inboxes - seperate
- Auto More - Yes
- Confirm Delete - No
- Keep messages - 15 days (I do have Outlook)
Email Settings
- Save copy in sent folder - No (BES)
- Enabled HTML - Yes (BES)
- Use Auto Signature - Yes (BES)
If on BES press menu key again for Folder redirection
- expand mailbox and select other folders needed (I run rules in Outlook)
- uncheck Sent Items folder stop getting duplicates
For other email accounts
- Confirm delivery - No
- Confrim read - no
- Send read receipts - no
Email Reconcilation
- Delete on Mailbox & handheld for all accounts
- Wireless reconcile - on
Spell Check
- Spell check email before sending - uncheck

Adjust all icons on main screen
- hide things that cannot be deleted
- arrange icons to order I prefer
- Combine all setup / options icons into the Setup folder
- Apply my own wallpaper

Activate on BES
Push service books for other email accounts
Install my apps
- AIM
- Facebook
- Poynt
- Worldmate Live
- Freetips
- Pandora
- Nobex Radio Companion

By now I'm pretty much in business some settings may have value to you so adjust to your preferences.

This takes me about an hour.

I am horrible at deleting things that i "might" want some day... like all those verizon apps under the "application center". I don't know if i should delete those or not. I connected my BB to my computer and downloaded that blackberry desktop software. I think that program took care of deleting some unwanted things like lanuages, ect... I still feel like the device lags pretty bad, is there something else i can do or will there be updates that make it run a litle smoother?

I find that my Tour hesitates once in a while, but it sounds like your experiencing general lag, are you running third party apps? These devices are pretty quick and you shouldn't be experiencing constant lag like this. Is your GPS on all the time? That could contribute.

I have also seen some lag on the Tour but I can attribute it to content protection being enabled. On non-content protected devices, I haven't seen a lot of lag unless someone has a bunch of 3rd party apps.

I'm sorry but i'm not exactly sure what you mean by "third party apps". i have Poynt, Viigo, RexConnect, and a couple of Golf Caddy apps, ect... Is this what you mean? And i DO have my GPS set to "Location On", should i change this and only use it when i need to?

Turn your GPS off if you do not need it otherwise it could and probably will drain your battery!

Yes, those are 3rd party applications. Poynt may be the culprit and as mentioned, would cause higher battery drain due to constant GPS usage.

Also - Pressing the Escape key to close an application doesn't really close them. Most apps will continue running in the background.

To close an app correctly, press the Menu Key, and then select Close, Quit, or Exit, depending on the app menu.
