Default New user Global Data Plan question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I'm about to receive an 8830 in the mail, and I plan to start using VZW's $29.99 data plan on top of my current phone plan.

I'm wondering about the global data plan. Is it something that I can switch to when I'm going to be traveling and switch back from when I'm home? Or will I need to be on it all the time?

Thanks!! I'm excited to try out my first BlackBerry!!!

As long as you got the SIM card with your phone, you can change back and forth between the global plan and the $29.99 plan any time you want. I do it all the time.

You can also call Verizon Global Services at (800) 711-8300

and get your phone unlocked, and then use local SIM cards when traveling abroad.

Of course you will likely not have any BlackBerry e-mail and data services when you use the local SIM card.

What NJ says is true. If you want to take advantage of VZW's global data plan and local calling rates, you would have to be swapping SIM cards back and forth.

Which I find to be very inconvenient. I have some cheap, unlocked quad band GSM/GPRS phones. I get local SIM cards for them, and leave my "home" card in the BB. I just carefully watch my calling on the BB as roaming rates are absurd.

Agreed. The wife and I are taking a trip to Europe this fall and I plan to buy a local phone at the PX at Ramstein to use, but it is nice to have an unlocked BB as a backup.
