Hi guys... OUCH!! just got the bill from last time traveling to Asia and US

With limited usage it was $500 ha ha ha... I am leaving for Asia again so would like to know if I switch to Phone Only setting, no data/ e-mails etc would be downloaded to my Bold? Last time when I arrive in Asia I would turn on the Bold and then it will start "download" all my e-mails to the handset thus prompting the data roaming charge?? I did Twitter a few times

So If I switch to PHONE ONLY setting, it will just be a phone and that no data/ e-mail would come thru and thus be charged??

I will also get a local prepaid sim card and switch to my Bold and I guess this is the best way, eh!

Actually, what you want is to go to Mobile Network Options and change Data Services to "Off".

This will still allow you to use the phone and SMS.

If you're talking about the 'Phone Only' profile setting... then no, this will not turn the data off.
Profiles only affect the alerts (tone,vibe,none) on the device.

If you want to turn the data features off while roaming, then use this setting:
Options > Mobile Network > Data Services = Off When Roaming (or just Off)

I was in the same boat as you - was in Asia for 3 weeks in December and got hit with a huge data bill. What I now do is, I keep the data option switched off when travelling abroad and use the Bold as a phone only, and only switch on the wi-fi option if I'm at a hotel or a place that offers free wi-fi. That way I can check emails, surf, etc. without going on ATT's international network. It's really a rip-off, how much we are charged for international roaming - especially as both voice and data are MUCH cheaper in many other parts of the world.

If you travel abroad a lot it's cheaper to get the AT&T unlimited international roaming.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but when I turn Data Services off, Wifi refuses to stay lit. When I turn data services back on, Wifi lights back up.

Not sure why Wifi would be dependent on the mobile data option, but at least on my Bold (on 244 fw) it seems to be dropping the wireless when I turn off the Data Services.

I too was looking for an option to use my Bold strictly for phone, and sync data on Wifi when it was available. With how it works now, if I want Wifi, I'm going to inadvertently get the carrier's data turned on too.

Pardon the dumb question, but if you turn off data services and are not near an accessible wifi spot, can you still receive your push email?

Hmmm...that's interesting. I'm going to Spain in the last week of May and will have to check out how the phone only/use wifi for data option works out for me.

A question - if the carrier's data does get inadvertently turned on, but you stiill go through wifi for your email and data downloads, will you be charged for international data roaming from AT&T? If so, I may buy some add-on data before I go. I really would prefer not to, though!

OK, so what happens if I was to get a pre-paid SIM card in Spain for voice and then use Wi-Fi to download data? If I'm in a wi-fi zone, would I still be able to download emails and surf, although I was using a different SIM card?
