Default Support for more than 3.4GB Micro SD?

Please Login to Remove!

I have an ATT 8820 with OS version 4.2. I had a 2GB Micro SD chip that worked fine but read (on here) that you can go larger than 2.0GB, or that the 8820 will support larger size chips. When I initially inserted the card it said 7.4GB, but then when I formatted the card it went down to 3.4GB.

Is there a way to get the full capacity (either 7.4 or 8.0GB)? Do I need to upgrade my OS to do this? I just unlocked my phone with a T-Mobile SIM card and it seems like that process may have changed some of the settings.

Any advice or help would be appreciated - I did search and did not find much that was helpful.

Thx.

Thanks - hopefully this will get pushed down quickly. I have 4.2.2 which makes sense that it only sees the 3.4GB. I would like to upgrade my OS so that I can use the larger Micro SD card - I do not see an FAQ on operating system upgrades. Is there a thread/link that will both walk me through this as well as explain the risk/reward of doing this? Will I lose any information? Settings, etc. by upgrading?

This thread will give you all the details you need.

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ast-asian.html

Also, make sure to check the box to create a backup, it will restore that backup when the OS upgrade is complete. That includes all of your data/settings/3rd party apps.

If you're on a BES, you will need to reactivate your device.

Thank you - I saw the thread stickied up top clearly stating OS upgrade for 8820 - I guess what I was looking to know is will I need my BES reactivated (thank you for the answer) backup(thanks again), also wondering if I should just go to the bottom & upgrade to the highest number (newest release) or what??? do any work better than others?

I'm really n00b to this and don't want to brick or F up my phone.

Thx a bunch for being paitent and answering my questions.

Regards,
Tom Winston

That link is the most current official release for the 8820. No issues upgrading to the newest release. That thread is all about that release. Read through it, see what others' thoughts are on that version.

If you take your time, be patient and follow the directions to the letter and you should be fine and not brick your device.

If you run into issues, that's what we're here for.

Trying to upgrade the OS now - can I ask... Am I supposed to do this through the BB Desktop Manager or just go to the file itself and load it up? The instructions really don't make this clear. Thx.

Seems to be doing great, BES is at 97% now, I really like the new email format... going to have to take a look at the rest of the stuff to make sure I didn't lose any settings or mess anything up with the new OS. I'm sure I'll have questions later - Thanks again for all the help so far!

Awesome! Glad to hear. If you're running BES 4.1.5 or higher, you will have HTML email on the device. If you have BIS email accounts (Hotmail, Gmail, etc.) log into your BIS account and resend service books. You will then have HTML email from them as well.

Thanks for the help - yes I do have HTML email now which is amazing... The web-browser is absolutely amazing too... totally regret not doing this earlier

The only drawback I'm running into is that the device is so mother F'ing slow i'm about ready to throw it at a wall!!! Its hanging up and just sits there - I feel like I've given up so much performance for the new fancy OS. Its like it'll just sit and hang, then wait (litterally 3-15 minutes) and it'll start working again.

When its working its amazing - truly the best blackberry ever... when it's freezing up/hanging up its so bad that I want to un-do the upgrade...

Any thoughts????

Hmm, that is not normal. 3-15 minutes?

What is your memory at (Options > Status > File Free = ??)

Also, do you have any applications running in the background. Press Alt + Escape simultaneously.

9588090 Bytes free - where is escape? if its the button between the track ball & the end call key - do I have to press & hold down the alt key and then just hit the back/escape button once? It looks like an alt/tab on a windows PC screen?

Browser, Phone, Home Screen, PTT (don't even use PTT, can I close/uninstall it?), Messages, BBM

I also rarely use BBM and don't know how to remove it from that list.

The "slowness" is insane - VERY frustrating when it happens.

EDIT: only app I have installed is my E*Trade Mobile Pro - everything else came that way out of the box/4.5 upgrade.

Those apps are normally there.

If you pull the battery does it seem to help with the speed?

sometimes that's the only way I can get the thing to unlock/unfreeze. it hangs up so bad that I have to pull the battery. It then takes FOREVER to reboot - which i guess is normal. Can I remove/uninstall any apps/programs to help with this?
