That is your GPS the three ))) means that your location is on .

i thought it was something to do with GPS....thanks.

now, in the options, the only disable feature is for location aiding....is there a way to turn GPS off on the phone if i wanted to ?

Not completely the under GPS Services is either going to be Location On or E911 Only
