Default GPS program ideas thread

Please Login to Remove!

I have a idea of a new software, but I decided I could make a common thread for people to post for gps applications ideas, so it is easier to find.

Feel free to post whatever ideas that might or might not work in here, and hopefully some developer might develop it.

How about application that sends an email with GPS location and if possible, map to current phone location when requested by any PIN message, sms, or email with correct keyword, and only to email address or sms or both specified by program settings?

It should be fairly easy and very small program. :D Thanks for reading.

so you would like to receive a SMS/eMail with a "request" & a correct PWD and then the Phone sends the current location to the requesting Phone Number (if request came in via SMS) or to the eMail sender (if request came in via eMail)...

Did I get that correct?

Almost, but sms or email are pre-configured, so program always sends to those no matter whatever origin request are from. That is to prevent people who figure keywords out from getting phone location. Plus it would alert the user that someone else tried to request it.

Here's steps in my conceptual program...

#1 User installs and configures the program. The program itself is also password-protected to prevent unauthorized changes. That step is also where user configures reception email or sms or both at same time. Keyword (or password whatever word is better ) is also set.

Suppose user sets reception email to [email address] and keyword to sendmelocationplease.

#2 User sends an email from [email address] account with same keyword as above. The program, having gotten the request, sends location information to [email address].

Basically that's it.

Something like the Urban Spoon (for iPhone/iPod Touch) would be handy. I recall using some other location based app that could find restaurants but it wasn't as elegant as and didn't have the options that Urban Spoon did.

I'd also like to see better weather apps. Not only current conditions and forecasts but animated doppler (very useful in places where the weather can quickly change -- like Houston) as well.

Seems way overkill for just something that tells me gps location of my phone when requested remotely.

You can add Sprint Family Locator to your phone for $5.00 a month.

Not that difficult to do. A number of issues do come up:

1) Such an application would have to monitor incoming email or SMS and send out email or SMS autonomously in response. Such an application could get very intrusive if the developer wanted, whom would you trust to write it?

2) If you are offering the program as a commercial offering, then you have to consider what happens if the blackberry is turned off, out of cover, out of GPS cover, shielded, wiped or just the app removed before the user could respond.

And so on.

Are you sure their isn't already an application that does what you want.

Yeah that is one of issues I wondered about. I don't want something that can used to spy on other uses.

I want it so I can find my phone if I ever lose it, but it can be used in may other ways, not all good ways.

There are already some applications that do that. Some have been recommended to people who have lost or had their BBs stolen. I'd be surprised if they aren't listed here.

f.e. enter office buliding...turn on wifi or bluetoth

Thumbs up New APPS

I think that what TAKESHI said about an application of weather probably with the capabilities to watch a doppler live can be helpful. And Iare Tosevite email, SMS, etc. can be very helpful for somebody that pratice hiking like my self.
