Default Rollout Device Software to remote devices

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I would like to rollout the latest v4.5 software to our devices. Is there a way to roll this out wirelessly to remote devices as I really don't want to recall >100 devices!

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Unfortunately no. For this to work, one of the requirements is that the device be at 4.5 OS already. Once you do upgrade them manually, you should be able to update them wirelessly for future upgrades.

... whenever RIM decides to flip the switch and turn on OTA handheld software updates.
It's not enabled yet.

I don't think so. It will just let you upgrade certain apps in OS but not the all os.

I thought you could use Software Configurations on the BES and then assign the appropriate configuration to each user. I believe though that you have to send out a link/URL to the user that they can use to access the new software. It's been quite a while since I've done this, but I'm pretty sure we were able to push out new software for the device in this manner.

Third-party applications are deployed wirelessly in this manner... not the BlackBerry OS.
Currently, the handheld software can only be loaded onto a device via USB cable.

So those of you who have hundreds, if not thousands of Blackberries deployed, how are you planning to tackle getting them upgraded?

Now if they'd actually release 4.5 from US carriers ...

unknown at this point but it is a huge problem. we have over 8k devices in the field..

downloading the web desktop manger now, that may be the best option.

a couple of the carriers have v4.5 for the very latest hardware only, we have a lot of 8830s for which I can only get v4.2.2.

we really need v4.5 to get control of our devices back, we currently have BIS provisioned service books on devices and we cannot remove them or block them until we get v4.5.

Treedude - We're probably going to list the main features of 4.5, then tell our end users that if they want them they need to purchase a new device.

I've been testing web desktop manager and its working well. I did an easy upgrade of an 8700 from 4.2 to 4.5. The only issue is you need to push out a policy or reg key to access the web page if you environment has user level permissions and not admin level.

This doesn't matter, delete vendor.xml and it will work fine. This is necessary if you have multiple carriers on your BES anyway.

I'm using Web Desktop Manager with my BES environment to deploy OS upgrades and it works great. There is a small plugin which you may need to push out if users don't have rights to install it.

Users can also use Web Desktop Manager to reactivate a device, switch a device, or set the wireless activation password. I've given our help desk instructions for this to give to users, and my life is easier!

How do you set this up? I would like to give it a try also. I only have a few users, 7, but they are never in the office here as they are on our sales team.

Web Desktop Manager is available for free download directly from blackberry.com

Ok not last question..... I have been playing with this all night now.... I have it installed on the Professional version and it look good so far... but.... I can not define the OS. So when you connect a BB it doesn't see the OS files on the server. I have shared the folder as instructed and defined the location in the conf folder... but the App Loader still does not see it. Any suggestions?

I know... stop spamming the forums... but the issue above, was because the computer I was using to test with was not on the domain. Added it to the domain and everything works great.

Now, my question is, how will this work if I have multiple models of phones connected to our Server.

For example I am with Verizon 8330. Our sales team has a few Curve 8310's from AT&T and a Pearl.

So can I install mulitple versions of the OS and have it detected by the device that is connected?

You can with Desktop Manager - I'm sure you can with the web version too - that would kind of defeat the point if you couldn't.
