I just purchased my first blackberry device yesterday (the curve). I previously had the Motorola Q. When I was on the phone today, I tried to send a SMS and it didn't let me. Is this normal for Blackberrys? I was able to while on my Motorola. Is there something I can change so I can do both? I have Verizon if that helps.

I think that you would have to be calling over Wifi first to be able to send a SMS text while on the phone, but I could be mistaken.

Instead of sending a SMS, try sending a MMS. The phone and SMS both use the CDMA signal. The MMS uses the data (EVDO) signal.

To answer your question, no there is nothing you can do to make this happen. Outside waiting for the Bold to become available on your network/carrier.

I use an 8320 on tmobile and sms while on the phone with no problem. Email is another story. Use it either UMA or EDGE.

I too have T-mobile's 8320 and i have no trouble sending SMS messages while on the phone with someone; it's a lil cumbersome but possible

Yup, 8320 here and can SMS and talk at the same time. GF has the same phone and I always get mad at her for texting while her and I are having a serious conversation.

I can do that too on AT&T 8310.

To do this, while on the call hit menu select switch applications, select SMS and have fun....

(I recommend using a headset when doing this)

Any gsm carrier (one with sim cards) can do this. A cdma (without cards) may or may not depending on the phone itself

Sending an SMS is very possible while on the phone, it travels over the same network as the voice.

SMS is not data. Data does not transmit while on the phone.

I can receive sms while having a conversation. But I can't answer back. I get the big red X which is annoying because on my plain ol LG Venus you could do both.

SMS is not data. At least, not on GSM -- I'm not sure what the story is with CDMA though.

There are plenty of old non-data-capable phones that can SMS.

I on on VZW and can send and receive SMS while on a call. The SMS travels on a signaling channel and is not affected while on a call. You will not be able to send MMS messages as they are considered data.
