Yes, for OS 4.2 and higher, Messages > Options > General Options > SMS and Email Inboxes = Separate.

good luck.

I did that and saved it. Now, instead of having both email and texts in the messages folder, I only have emails in the messages folder. Not even sure where my texts went to.

Should be in the new separate SMS/MMS Folder which may be located way at the bottom somewhere or hidden. You can always switch back to "combined" if you still can't locate the folder.

So, since I separated the sms and email, it should have given me a separate sms folder? I don't see it anywhere. I changed it back and now see my sms in the messages folder but also, the emails are still in that same folder as well.

FOUND MY ANSWER on another forum. Thought this might help someone else.
After you do the above steps, do this...

Go to applications>highlight the folder that says SMS and MMS and press Menu> Move> then scroll to the up icon and click.

this places the folder on your desktop and you can move it wherever you want from there. (also allows you to make one of the convenience keys your text message folder)

Hi,
Correct me if I'm wrong ... so now after setting "SMS and Email Inboxes" SEPARATE, here's what will happened:

- emails will show in their respective email folders
- sms will go into SMS & MMS folder

- how about the Messages folder? Will it still contain everything from SMS, Emails, Chats transcript? This is what seems to be showing in my 8900.

Secondly, also I thought of clearing my Messages list, but is there a way so that it won't reflectively delete my email messages too?

thanks

messages icon is a central point for all messaging. You can seperate your SMS messages to a new Icon. However all your emails will still go to the messeges icon. they will also go to their seperate icons. if you want your mail seperate for each different email, use their respective icons and hide the messeges icon. This way you have your sms icon, and each email icon.
When you delete in messages, it will delete in the respective email icon too, and vice versa.
You can have seperate email, or combined email, its a preference.

and anyone that seperates their SMS and cannot find their icon.
1. choose SHOW ALL and make sure it isnt hidden
2. make sure its not in a folder
3. pull the battery
4. change your theme to another and see if its there
5. change back to your own theme and see if it came back

Just be aware that PIN messages, saved browser pages, saved browser requests, etc only show up in Messages.
