For some reason, I am getting spam newletters from bplay. Most of the time I am pretty careful with what I sign up for. And I dont remember signing up for anything on bplay. At least that I'm aware of.

Does anyone else get these?

Yes, I used to get them and I never found an effective way to unsubscribe from their mailing list.
Once I started flagging them as SPAM within GMail, they now just go right into the junk with the rest of the crap I get.
I never purchased anything from them either. I just assume they bought or stole my email address from some other vendor's list.

since they are so deeply in bed with viigo (the viigo entertainment app is nothing more that a huge ad for bplay), that is where my money is... do/did you use viigo?

I have never loaded viigo. That is for sure. So I am wondering what other app/game I loaded which launched me into their advert scheme. I'm now thinking it was a game off of the blackberry.com website. But still unsure.

I think that's it. At some point, you may have installed one of their games. Either a demo or a freebie.

I've also been dealing with their spam. All they've managed to do is assure that I will *never* buy one of their products.

re: Spam in general

I created a free hotmail account a while back and I use it solely for online stuff. If I order software or even merchandise from Pottery Barn, they get the hotmail address. Any time I need to give an email address for something, that's the one they get. It's my spam repository. I log in periodically just to keep it active, but nothing relevant goes there. Yahoo, Excite, GMail, all offer these free accounts, and having one just for this kind of thing is a necessary self-defense mechanism nowadays. Only family and friends get my real address. Even when I sign up for a forum, I start with hotmail and change it down the road when I feel like I can trust them.

Since I'm a Mac user, Safari is my default browser. But just for hotmail I keep Opera installed and have my hotmail set as the home page. Need to check a confirm in the spam repository? Just launch Opera! Nothing against Opera mind you. It just works well for Mac users and Windows Live services.

I used to take the same approach as rambo47. One address for "real people" and one for shopping, registrations, etc. But Gmail and Google Apps changed that. Their spam filtration is so great that I have moved my "real" address to Google Apps and use that for everything. I still have a secondary gmail account, but it isn't really used anymore.

My former "toss-away" email accounts were with Hotmail and Yahoo!. Both horrible as far as spam filtration goes.

May I suggest a Firefox addon called Sxipper, or Trashmail? It allows you to create pseudo-email addresses on the fly that forward to your real email address. When creating the disposable address, you can specify its life... days, weeks, or number of forwards. This has worked wonders on my spam levels. Just a suggestion.

The problem with the for-spam e-mail address is demonstrated by bplay's approach. They grab the e-mail address that's the default for your Blackberry. For me, that's my work e-mail.

So, if you're concerned about this sort of thing (i.e., a Blackberry app taking your default e-mail address and sending to a company), make sure to make your default e-mail address the for-spam one. Even so, it's possible to get all the e-mail addresses associated with your BB.

So, I write to them to get removed from their mailing list. They refuse to do so, saying that I need to go to the link at the bottom of their newsletter. I can't get it to work.

They also provide me a link to a third party site (campaignerpro). I'm taken to a place that's in broken English and... get this... is already filled out with someone else's information. I can see someone's name, e-mail address, and phone number.

Yeah... this is really a company that we should be trusting.

Funny how it's so easy to be put on a spam list but not so easy to get taken off. Makes you wonder how much email marketers (campaignerpro) pull down for this type of business.

BPlay never took my BB default address. I guess I gave them my Yahoo email, another spam repository for me. Spam on boys, 'cause nobody' cares at that address!
