You should have gone with an 8820 if you wanted GPS. The 8800 only supports GPS in limited areas.

To get a GPS "fix" you must be outside in area with a clear view of the sky. It can take up to 10 minutes, perhaps longer to get a good fix. It really depends on how far way the last fix was and how long ago it was. The Sats are not geosynchronus so the GPS itself must download the ephemeris tables so it knows where to look for the satellites, hence the longer time it takes.

Ephemeris tables are what tell the device where the satellites are at any given time and place. In celestial navigation the Ephemeris tables tell you what stars are where at any given time and place.

Check the link: http://gpsinformation.net/main/almanac.txt

Always happy to help a BB pal learn something new!

It can really take up to 10 minutes to get a fix on the bb gps? I'm glad I didn't sign up for Verizon's service and just kept my garmin. Gets a fix to within 15-20 feet in about 15 seconds, even if I just off the plane 1500 miles from where it was last used.

This isnt true for everytime you try and get your location. The first time you try and find the satellites it takes a while. After, it usually just takes a couple seconds. Every once in a while it may take a while if you are in a bad location.

It depends on how long ago you used it and how current the tables are. I think the tables contain 7 days worth of data, but I am not sure.

You should also remember, the Garmin, et al, is a dedicated GPS device and not a cell phone, email device and PDA. Plus, they generally have a much better processor and more memory available than a phone. Made for one thing and one thing only - GPS.
