Default Firmware Upgrade Problems

Please Login to Remove!

Hello Everyone:

I am a bell user, and I decided to upgrade to sprint's firmware. In order to do that, I downloaded the latest version, installed, then deleted the vendor.xml file, and then finally launched desktop manager.

Clicked on application loader, it said something about the version i have is newer and do I want to downgrade...

Anyways, did that, somehow after doing that i still had my bell main theme installed?

so i tried once more, however this time wiping the device
So, just to make sure, i deleted the device with jl_cmdr, deleted the sprint file from trial # 1 and reinstalled it again..., deleted vendor.xml, launched desktop manager...

it installed the software os again... but somehow its still bell main theme reappearing after this...

shouldn't sprints standard theme should come up?

I don't think Sprint's theme would show up.

I'm agreeing with that.
Your Bell phone has a specific vendor code that it loads from the OS, so although you will have the Sprint software, unless you, say, unlock the themes you want (John Clark's optimizing thread i know walks through that) you aren't going to get a different companies theme... You'll still only get those assocated to your vendor code

Yup, mizditz101 nailed it! And don't ever hit Alt-F4 when upgrading.

oo... I never thought of that.. maybe I SHOULD change my avatar...
I don't want to be the reason someone's phone gets goofed!

On topic.
If you want to get other themes you can go here and follow through those instructions.
Beware keeping all those themes added onto your phone can use a lot of memory on your phone, but it's not a big deal to load them all to see which you like!
(I did it and I ended up keeping Rogers, and Tmobile UK's themes instead of my Tmobile US theme!!)

With what I know, deleting the vendor.xml can let you use another carrier's OS for your HH (same M/N) and themes aren't part of that package.

That only makes it so you can use another company's OS..
It doesn't give you that companies themes. Just the OS.
You STILL have to go edit the blackberry.alx and delete vendor codes for themes.

I did this like 3 hours ago myself and upgraded to Rogers' OS... I still had just my tmobile theme, because my phone is vendorID 100, not 107.

yes true but if you dont delete the vendor.xml file then you wont get another carriers themes on the device in the first place. then you edit blackberry.alx and can get the appropriate themes that you want.

When I had my tmobile OS(earlier today right out of the box at 10am).. I didn't delete the vendor.xml. All I did was edit the alx and got my themes.

vendor.xml does NOT unlock anything other than being able to add the OS.
This is a little off topic though...

In the long run, vakulm, go visit the optimizing thread and follow those directions.. you'll free up some extra space, and be able to get to other company themes

I beleive that she was referring to comments related to her avatar not obtaining other carriers themes.

It was a little bit of that, and a little of I don't believe it's in the OP's best interest to have the topic become an argument about whether or not the vendor.xml file gives you all your themes...
I took it to a PM though

I'm assuming he forgot the word "to" after the word obtaining.
That's how I read it anyway..

Mizditz was correct it was a typo on my part. She made a comment on her avatar followed by a comment stating she was off topic and provided ON topic comment. Now *our* discussion is totally off topic VirexInc. Back to the OP's questions and issue please.

I think we are getting Themes and Splash Screens mixed up.

The splash screens are hard coded and can never be deleted or loaded. Splash screens are what you first see when the BB boots up just before seeing the desktop or security verification bar, or whatever. These are done at the factory before shipping to the original vendor of the BB.

No amount of OS loading, vendor.xml editing/deleting, etc. will change or get rid of the splash screen. If you have a T-Mobile branded phone, for example, it will always show the T-Mobile splash screen until the end of time (barring chip replacements and such, which are hardly worth the while and beyond the means of most).

Really, the only way you will know is if you go to Options - About, and it says your OS version is the same as that of Sprint's OS release..
Take my phone for example. I have a T-Mobile phone, with a Roger's OS. There is no real obvious branding on it that says "this is a rogers OS" it's just instead of 4.2.1.107 (tmobile release) it's 4.2.1.109 (rogers release) If that makes sense
