Default Why do I need UMA?

Please Login to Remove!

Ok, I've had problems with my 8320 with regard to wifi ever since I go it a couple of weeks ago.

I've now managed to get the UMA signal at home which seems to mean the wifi signal is black rather than greyed out. I switched off the mobile network to check if I could browse and send emails over wifi and I could, great!

The problem I now have is that, when I get home I automatically get UMA which in turns means;

1) I cannot make outgoing calls at all
2) When I call my mobiel from my landline it rings, it get connected, but then disconnects within a couple of seconds.

My questions;

1) Do I need UMA to be able to browse and send emails? If not, how can I disconnect so that I can browse, send/receive emails and ,make/receive calls?

2) If I do need UMA to to browse/send emails, do I need to take on a certain plan or use Orange as my ISP rather than my current ISP, Sky Broadband?

Any help would be appreciated.

I cannot make or receive phone calls

To turn off UMA simply go to Options >Mobile Network and set it to Mobile Network Only. This will give you a bold wifi icon (data) and EDGE.

UMA gives you the ability to make voice calls and send/receive sms over your home wireless internet connection. You can browse and get your email with a bold wifi logo and EDGE but your voice calls/sms will go over EDGE.

It sounds like there is an issue with your router/isp if the BB is dropping calls while on UMA. Also, make sure your 911 address is entered in your profile on the TMobile website.

Yes, but i then won't be able to browse and send emails.

I don't want to have to turn off my wifi everytime i want to make or receive calls.

yes, you will. You are not turning off the wifi connection for data in mobile network. You are only turning it off for voice/sms. Just try it.

Either that or you'll need to do some trouble shooting of the UMA problem. Could be a router problem, router setting problem, ISP problem.

Go to Main Page - BlackBerryFAQ.com and read up on the wifi info there.

Ok, i've gone to Options>Mobile Network and set the Connection Preference to 'Mobile Network Only'.

The wifi symbil is now grey and the 'off' symobol indicating, according to the manual, that the wireless network is turned off.

I also now get the yellow circle with the dash in it rather than a green tick...

Strange. With TMobile the wifi logo stays bold and EDGE comes up. I would see if you can troubleshoot your UMA issues.

Ok John, thanks.

On my other point, do I need to suscribe to a seperate package for calls to work over UMA? I'm on Orange with Sky as my broadband supplier.

Wirelessly posted (BB 8860: BlackBerry8320/Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Your isp may be the issue. There are some other threads here about UMA only working on Orange broadband.

Aha. I thought I'd searched everywhere. Another useful thread.

I have the same problem -- I think -- as chippyb. I'm on Orange UK and get UMA on my home network (ISP idNet) which stops damn near everything from working (see http://http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-8300-series-discussion-curve/118298-orange-uma-uk-working-2.html#post850320)

Orange advised me to set the Connection Preference to 'Mobile Network Preferred' (amongst other things). The wifi logo greys out but I can browse using the wifi browser. BUT 3rd party apps use GPRS not wifi.

I don't actually want to use UMA for calls, but I need to have WiFi up for other things (MidpSSH is essential for me)

Not to sway from original topic, but John Clark, are you saying it is possible to check email over wifi without an EDGE connection?

Yes, as long as you have a BB data plan.
