Default Can I Avoid the extra monthly charge on Contracts for Email

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I'm planning to get a blackberry 8310 Curve, on contract (T-Mobile).

But t-mobile are charging me an extra £5, on an instant email service.

Can i avoid this? I just want to use the browser to access my email instead.

Thanks

You need a data plan to get internet/data/email.

It is not a well known fact and RIM does not want it out but if you turn your handheld on and off rapidly, it will confuse the "system" and allow you full Blackberry services without paying.

First I've heard of this...or is this tongue-in-cheek?

Can you point to any documentation or articles about this? (other than Snopes?)

Nope you need a data plan. No data plan == no over the air email. 5 pounds is cheap considering what other carriers here in the states try charging.

What does a 5 pound plan provide. That sounds like a heck of a good deal!

Could it be an SMS package? Honestly, I don't understand the need for SMS when you can email (included in BB Data Plan) a phone.

TMO is always selling US$15 unlimited SMS along with their US$20 BIS. No need for it if you're lookin' to save a few bucks.

I'm glad I got the unlimited.... I don't use all that much data but I had over 10mb last month. (and I only had my service for 3/4 of the month)

True, but most people I know don't have email on their mobiles. (neanderthals)
I had to get a text package because that's how everyone else contacts me.

Yeah I use about 450mb+ of data per month. If I had the 3mb I would get charged thousands of $ extra lol

So true! I've got a group of about 5 friends with bb's and the rest still run just phones. Kind of sucks that I have to pay for their lack of technology needs or the financial burden . I've tried to say NO text to me, but that's like talking to a brick wall.

I did not understand either as all I do is email but some BB users communicate via SMS or text messages to others who are just using a phone and not a email capable device.

I can't imagine! <vbg>

Hey, sorry for the late reply.

What T-mobile is offering is £15 line rental + £7.50 for unlimited web surfing.

But when i select a Blackberry for the phone i want, it adds an extra £5 to an instant email service, so that i wont need the internet to log on to email.

But as i have the unlimited web surfing package, i won't need this email service "thingy".

seems web n walk is a 1gb plan. If you exceed that you will be asked to lower your usage, and if you exceed again, you will be dropped. The extra £5 is probably just for blackberries (this would be my guess) since it requires a connection with a different data source in addition to standard data coverage.

how about if i bought a blackberry curve separate, then went for the t-mobile contract (and use the sim in blackberry)? Would the blackberry still function as normal, or will i miss out on some of its features?

i cannot say for certain, but i would be willing to guess that the email/Blackberry Internet Service would not. You could always check and if it doesnt work call them and tell them to add the extra charge on there.
