Verizon GPS update 10-29-07
Please Login to Remove!
Take it for what its worth, but I got word today from a corp sales rep that when VZNav is released for the 8830, that GPS will be unlocked. That meant that all native functioning also. I aksed this because we did not establish out account with them (90+ lines) because of the fear of even in VZNav was offered, our sales people working in Europe would not be able to use the GPS there. He and his technical rep, who was on conference with me, both said that GPS will function anywhere in the world, just not through VZ Nav.
I will believe it when I see it, but they wanted to still have a meeting with me even though we told them we already went with AT&T.

I'm not buying it! They are probably gonna keep it locked up so they can charge you like crazy to use their service.

I am on the fence.
Not to rehash the past but I'm still bitter about the whole situation

From a technical standpoint the GPS chip won't work in the EU.

Actually, people can be skeptical like you are and it is warranted. If you think about it from a different perspective, Verizon could have held the GPS back for reasons two fold: 1. The validation of VZ navigation was not completed 2. Since VZ Nav was not completed, they did not want to release the GPS and lose potential Verizon customers to 3rd party pay for service vendors. I am starting to think that even if they did have the thought of crippling GPS/ 8830 to only work with VZ Nav, all of the customer and business complaints have led them too just fully release it, but only when VZ Nav was available or ready for the phone..
I can't imagine that these guys would blatantly lie to me while also asking to come into my office since they knew I specifically did not go with them for this reason....GPS use in Europe. This is something that VZ Nav cannot offer and they would have to know that the GPS would be fully released in order to use in Europe or blatantly lying and having a company sign a contract for 94 BB accounts could open them up to a serious lawsuit. Maybe they would, but I tend to think Verizon has maybe a little more integrity then that, at least when it comes to major corporate accounts.

Based upon the single (I hope correct) assumption that the gps receiver in the 8830 is the same as the 8800, I can tell you that 1) it works just fine in Europe and 2) even works (to get GPS coordinates and altitude) in mid-air half way across the Atlantic!

I would have to assume this is correct. Satellites dont just stop working once you cross over international boundary line! LOL

I'm going to cross my fingers and be optimistic on this one. Like I told others when we heard that VZNav was coming out. If they don't fully open up GPS all hell is going to break loose. The isht will hit the fan if they don't do it. Let's all hope VZW saves themselves the hassle and does the right thing.

Good luck guys!
A friend with a Sprint 8830 told me the GPS stopped working once the device switched to GSM.
I tried switching my Bell 8830 to GSM (obviously no carriers in North America), and all of a sudden nothing recognised the GPS chip. BB maps lost the option to start GPS tracking. The Options menu for GPS had "GPS Data Source" as "None", and it couldn't be changed.
Give it a try. I would like to have it work when I travel.

Either a Sprint only thing (if it's even true) or an 8830 issue. The 8800s don't have this issue obviously. Seems more of a software lockdown then anything else. What doesn't make any sense is why there are users reporting of using GPS on their Sprint 8830 while out of the country on a GSM carrier. I'd wager to say that the phone will allow an interface with the GPS chipset if there's a carrier signal on either the CDMA or GSM radios, but that's just speculation based on current facts available. It's certainly not the way I would have coded the interface, but whatever....

The CDMA chipset and Qualcomm GPS don't work when in GSM roaming. Just the way it is.
