EDIT: I just bought a BIS/BES data plan and my Wi-Fi works as before but now shows up at the top right as a blue Wi-Fi icon (instead of being greyed out) and displays a green checkmark beside it in Manage Connections.

Great advise.
If I am not mistaken, with yellow icon you will be able, at most, use WiFi browser. When it gets blue (actually, for me it is green) you will be able to use all features of blackberry over WiFi: Blackberry or Internet browser, email, IM, etc., etc.
I think what RIM wanted to say with their color codes is the following:
Yellow: you can see Internet but aren't connected to RIM servers (not having blackberry data plan explains it, your connection to RIM servers is refused)
Green (blue?): you are connected to RIM servers and having all blackberry services over WiFi.
