Lightbulb Mass handheld firmware upgrade - Looking for advice and options, real world feedback

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone, we will be looking to upgrade the firmware on over 400 8310's Canada wide. We have recently applied SP5 and would like to be able to use the HTML email and OTA firmware updates moving forward.

I have zero experience with the Web Desktop Client, but that seems to be the only option (we dont' install the desktop software and remove all USB cables, strictly wireless BES environment).

Has anyone successfully taken on a task of this magnitude? I am looking for some guidance and real world feedback.

Thanks again

J

I would STRONGLY advise you against this.

HTML email was not enabled in SP5 for a reason. If you hacked it and enabled HTML mail capabilities, then you are currently running an unsupported BES in a large production environment... and that's not wise.

Wait until RIM releases a version of BES with official HTML mail support, as well as an official OS 4.5 for your handhelds.
I think OS 4.5 is available for the 8310 now... but not from Rogers.

Your mass firmware update for 400 phones is not going to be easy, no matter how you decide to tackle it.

Thanks for the feedback penguin3107, just to confirm I HAVE NOT done any of this yet. I am more looking for guidance or an approach to this once the proper firmware has been posted (and thoroughly tested).

Just looking to see if anyone has used the Web Desktop to do this or how they would approach.

you can use a network share, and the apploaderder lite, and send out a link to the users as you are ready to do them, do no need to install desktop manager. plan your upgrade wisely.

I have web desktop manager setup for just this purpose as well application loading. I run Berrystats to get a inventory based on OS then send the URL to around 50 people at a time. I set the IT policy to force the update if they are not current.

This took a little bit to get setup as the desktops here are locked down so I had to make a SMS package to push. Still cannot get out SSL cert installed to replace the self generated one so users have to live with clicking YES to trust it.

Server load has been fine.
