i downloaded the gmail for balckberry feature wher it palces the gmail icon onyour "desktop" works great but it doesnt automatically tell me when i have new mail. I have to refresh it each time and it gets annoyin

how can i get it to give me instant notification a new email?

Did you try IMAP instead or was that a no go for you?

I use both the gmail and google apps clients. They both have a setting (menu-more-settings) to "Notify me when there is new mail in my Inbox."
I can't imagine why it's default is off.

You must also edit your audio profile to change the default mute to a notifying tone and or vibrate with a volume.

It will show up in your audio profile settings as either:
Gmail - New Mail
or Mail by Google - New Mail

how fast does it update?? seems to take like 20 minutes or so???

GMail has a push relay with RIM.

This means that if you set up GMail in your BIS email settings, GMail will alert you when new messages arrive.

I am not sure how the GMail app runs or how it performs in regards to the speed of messages, but setting the BIS to get your GMail may be faster.

Not true push any more - see thread. Can be fixed by forwarding Gmails to your @blackberry.net address and changing the 'reply-to' in BIS
